BD has set me off on an Adventure of Indie Roguelikes
« on: September 22, 2013, 07:33:54 pm »
Well, i really have gotten inspired by BD and wanted to see what some other RL's were like, and so i set off and ran straight into the classics, Rogue, Angband,  ADOM, Dwarf Fortress, Tales Of Maj' Eyal, Brogue, Doom RL, Teleglitch and others.

Whoa!! What a group of inspiration and difference. I must say i haven't yet dove in. So far just downloaded and checked out videos on YouTube to see how they play.

I still have my hands full with BD, every time i think i'm doing OK, i run into something i wasn't expecting.  :)

Well, that keeps it interesting though.  :)

I noticed dungeons of dredmor strangely lacking off your list. It is a good one!

"Sword of the Stars: The Pit" is another one worth looking at :)

There's one called Crawl Stone Soup or something like that that's pretty good, too.

Oh yeah, heard good things about sword of the stars: the pit.

I would recommend starting with dredmor or there first. Graphics and usable UI adds a lot especially if you're new to the genre! I haven't played the pit, but I think dredmor would win out for its humor and amazing skill system.

DoomRL and Dredmor are pretty freaking great.  Brogue is decent too.   Angband, hmm.... my problem with the "big 4" of roguelikes (Hack, Crawl, and so on) is that they actually go completely overboard with the randomness, and not at all in a good way.   I actually dont care for them myself.  Havent played this "stone soup" version of Crawl myself though, that may be different.   Dredmor though is the best one to start with.  DoomRL uses great mechanics but it does become very difficult.  Offers alot of difficulty settings though, and stuff like that.  Keep your speakers on if you play that one, the sound is actually important.

Dwarf Fortress is absolutely amazing, but.... Lol, make sure you understand what it means to learn THAT game.   I sat through 50+ tutorial videos on Youtube to learn this one, and even then, that sure as heck aint gonna teach you everything, it just gets you started.   But.... ahh, bloody amazing game indeed.  So very good.  And hilarious.

DF Adventure mode is simpler and more roguelike.

Relatively. ;)

As for Fortress mode...

Well, it's been said: Dwarf Fortress is the Dwarf Fortress of simulation games.

I started out with Dungeons of Dredmor.  It's a pretty good introduction to the genre.  I've been playing a lot of "action roguelikes" lately -- games that apply roguelike concepts to action games.  Spelunky, Binding of Issac, Rogue Legacy, and Legend of Dungeon are some good ones to check out if this interests you.

FTL is really good.  I guess I'd call that a strategy roguelike.  Also, this looks really promising, although I haven't tried it yet.

Oh man. The action roguelikes of BoI and Spelunky. Soooo good. Spelunky even has a freeware version out there to try.  There's a lot of depth to the genre.
