Valley 2 Keyboard problem -Can't fire in 1 direction
« on: February 23, 2013, 11:56:52 am »
With a number of spells, I can't fire toward the upper left diagonal. Happens with Fire Whip, Light Snake and Cleft Gust.
The diagonal does work with most spells, which kinda rules out the hardware limitation possibility. Just tested, works perfectly with the xbox360 controller.

So, is this something I can fix on my end?

Meanwhile, I'll use the xbox controller.

I sometimes have this happen with my keyboards in some games: if I press 2 keys simultaneously, it always registers both; if I press 3 keys simultaneously it sometimes registers them all and sometimes only registers 2 of them (depending on which specific 3 keys are involved).  I've always assumed it was because I was using cheap and/or non-gaming keyboards.

In Valley2 I could fire upper-left, but not lower-right.

After spilling coffee all over my really expensive gaming keyboard, I needed a new one and since then I've become unemployed, so I had to make the difficult move to a cheaper alternative. I was terrorfied that my £10 (about $13) budget wouldn't give me a keyboard which would satisfy my needs after owning a £40-£50 keyboard.

However, I found this little keyboard: http://www.emprex.com/02_products_02.php?id=267

It's cheap but the quality is really high. It has full profile keys and anti-ghosting for WASD and the arrow keys as well as a few other gaming keys such as ctrl, space, e,q,r. The Anti-ghosting will help you with issues like this.

The overall quality of the keyboard is great and I was surprised by it. I adapted to it really quickly.

There's only two real issues I have with the keyboard and they are: The volume keys don't "feel" right to me and the capslock key isn't indented on the right hand side which means I often accidentally press it if I slip off the A key.

Other than that it's a great cheap gaming keyboard.

Also the broken English on the box it comes in is hilarious. (I was worried when I saw how bad the English was, but nevertheless it's a great keyboard)

After my second gaming keyboard broke from regular wear and tear WAY too fast (high on features, low on build quality), I made the switch to using a Mac keyboard for my windows desktop. The only thing it lacks is a print screen button as far as I'm concerned. The wired version is $40, which is a lot cheaper than a lot of keyboards, and it doesn't have any of the problems that some super-cheap keyboards do.

Then again it depends on the keyboard -- I used a $9 generic keyboard for about 8 years until it finally died, and it supported 3 concurrent key presses with no problem (but not 4, whereas my Mac one supports 4 or 5). I loved that little $9 keyboard and had bought 6 of them for pcs at the company I used to work for. I was really sad to not be able to find that anymore after it broke. I don't know the brand, but I got it at intrex.

Being a fan of fighting games on PC, I'm used to dealing with the simultaneous keys limit, but what makes this different is the fact that some spells do work in that direction. If it was due to the limit, shouldn't it apply to all spells indiscriminately?

Is it the same key but different spells? Or different keys?

Different keys can be handled in different groups, and sometimes they don't work we'll across those boundaries. I don't really understand all the rules of why, or of what happens on which keyboards. But as a test, you might try swapping the bindings between a spell that works and one that doesn't, and seeing how that does. If its actually spell-specific and not key-specific I would be really surprised.

You may be able to work around this just by changing your bindings a bit to not use whatever the offending key is, I don't know.

Yea, if the exact same key combo works on some spells and not others that could be a bug in the game, but if it's different keys it could just be the "strange and wonderful" way in which the key signals are overlaid by the keyboard: some combos work, some don't, and there's no apparent rhyme or reason.

Now that you mentioned it, I've gone back and checked. All problematic spells are the same type: Secondary. So, it really IS a low quality keyboard issue.
Pressing the combination of Up+Left+S doesn't register, but everything else does... Oh well, thanks for helping me find the exact source of the problem, now I can work around it.

I know exactly what you mean, I love playing old tekken and street fighter games on pc with one of my friends, and the emprex keyboard I'm using is actually better at it than my old saitek keyboard. It allows 6 simultaneous keys to be pressed when the keys are "w,a,s,d,q,e,[space], [shift] and the arrow keys.) I believe keys like ctrl, alt,c and r.are included too, although I'm not sure. Really cool to have that many keys anti-ghosted for a cheap 15 dollar keyboard.
