Trouble with multiplayer
« on: April 28, 2012, 12:58:59 am »
Hello all!

Great game. Loving the single-player. I'm good at this game because I like to read and I'm good at following directions. ;)

I talked 5-6 friends into also picking this up and we're trying to get a multiplayer world going.

We can see each others games, but cannot connect. I've been able to connect to random hosted multiplayer games, but not any hosted by friends of mine.

We are all thinking this is a port forward issue.

Would love an easy connect option via steam or something else (move to suggestions if necessary).

Thanks for making a great game.

If you think you got problems with the ports, try out hamachi or tunngle. Hamachi lets you create a personal local network (LAN) over the internet. If everyone joins that network you can just connect via direct ip connection, without the need to open ports. I already tried this and it works. Another method is tunngle, its essentially the same, except that you dont have personl networks, but community networks, where random strangers can join too. The game iteself didn't show in the LAN game tab, so its unlikely for someone to join if they dont specifically know that your hosting a game, but it mightve been just on our end that we could see each other games. But direct ip connection works fine.

Appreciate the advice. I've tried Hamachi for other games before without success, but will give it another go.

Welcome to the forums :)  Have you looked through the stuff at http://portforward.com/

That site also has a port checker but it involves downloading something (iirc) ; there's a web-based port-checker here:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

AVWW's default port is 32322, though you can change that in the settings menu.  When you connect via Find Internet Games it will automatically match the client's port to the server's.

Let us know how it goes :)

Obviously this is specific to my situation personally, but I've been using Hamachi all weekend to LAN with friends/family, and everything has worked fine so far.
Variables change from pc to pc, but Hamachi worked for me! :)
