Sounds like your install went bad. Did you buy this through Steam? Or somewhere else?

i checked the posts before i posted saw one similar to this a reinstalled it twice because i accidently deleted the demo first :p. but when i reinstall both the demo instantly downloads and then the full game takes a long time again

With Steam, rather than a reinstall what you want to do is hit Properties on the game in the steam menu, then go and hit Verify Local File Cache (or somesuch), and that will redownload any files that are missing if the steam client didn't download all the files.  100% of the time thus far, any sort of black screen error has always been an incomplete install of the game; not to say yours might not be the first to be something else, but the standard remedy is something to look at really carefully.

Now, beyond that:

1. Are you running any antivirus software?  Way back with Kaspersky 2010, it was running some stuff that would incorrectly mess with our game AI War.  There's always a chance that some sort of antivirus software more recently is messing with this game; so you'll want to make sure and whitelist this game or make an exception or just temporarily disable the antivirus to check if that's even the issue.

2. Are your drivers up to date?  The message about it not being able to find a screen resolution is an internal unity 3d message that usually means you don't have a 3D graphics card installed with anything beyond stock software drivers that come with windows (which give you only VGA resolution and a small screen resolution).  That's the only context I've ever seen it under, anyway.  Updating to the latest drivers on nVidia or ATI, depending on which brand of card you have, would probably fix the issue.  Or if it's an integrated Intel chipset or similar, that's trickier but the manufacturer of your laptop or motherboard would usually have the latest drivers on their site (for instance, Sony, Dell, etc, all have that sort of thing).  Another place you could check for driver updates is on windows update, since those would be better than what it sounds like you have now, even if those aren't as up to date as the very latest direct from the manufacturer (and there's no guarantee there will be anything there).

3. Beyond that, if you look in your game install folder, you'll see an AVWW_Data subfolder.  If you look in there, you'll see output.log.  Uploading that may provide some clues as to what's going on.

Hope that helps!

Haha, our computers are twins.  I have literally the exact same processor, GPU, desktop resolution setup with dual monitors at the same sizes, OS, amount of RAM, and so forth.  I've never seen someone post literally my exact specs before. :)

So, yeah; it really sounds like either a corrupt install or the antivirus messing with it.

ok thanks for the help, i do have Norton antivirus should i disable it while I'm downloading it or while i'm running it?
Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs
Post by: x4000 on May 08, 2012, 09:38:32 am
I'd temporarily disable norton while running the game and see if that helps.  If so, then make an exception in there.  I believe there's another thread about Norton being wonky in this forum somewhere or other; the general consensus is that people recommend AVG antivirus, which is both free and (reputedly) better.

There were some comments here about Norton doing some very bad things to programs, including ours: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,10186.msg100541.html#msg100541

Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs

Did you try verifying the steam cache?

Also you'll want to look for other programs that would interfere with the game, such as:

1. Other antivirus software (somtimes people have more than one and don't know it).
2. Antispyware software (some of it gets overzealous for a bit, despite the fact we are not spying on you).
3. Software that messes with Direct3D applications in general, such as inserting extra HUD elements into it.  Steam itself does this, but works great with the game.  Some others may be coded in such a way that they do not work as well.

That's going to be 300mb+, and if verifying from the steam cache reports success then nothing is wrong with your install.  If verifying the steam cache works, then the problem is purely with either drivers (unlikely given your desktop resolution, etc) or with some other program as I noted in my post right above.
Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs
Post by: littlepudintater on May 08, 2012, 09:54:22 am
yeah i werified integrity and shut off norton and it still says game init(4,5,6,or7 then the date)
Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs

Then it's pretty much down to drivers or this:

Also you'll want to look for other programs that would interfere with the game, such as:

Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs

my resolution is at 1266 x 768 would that have an affect on anything?
Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs
Post by: x4000 on May 08, 2012, 10:01:44 am
so what do you recommend i do

You know what you have installed, and I don't.  I suggest that you look at your installed programs and see if anything seems suspicious along the lines of what I mentioned.  If one of them does, then try disabling them temporarily.

I recommend going to nvidia.com and getting the latest drivers for your graphics card.

my resolution is at 1266 x 768 would that have an affect on anything?

I'm not sure -- maybe.  That's not really a standard resolution, so quite possibly that would cause problems.  I didn't code the unity 3D engine so I can't say for sure, but that's certainly a resolution I've never heard of before, so that could be related.
Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs

i will try changing my resolution then updating my drivers

oh also whats the standard resolution to play the game?

Anything you like that's a standard monitor resolution.  1280x900, 1280x1024, 1920x1280, 1024x768, and so on.  There are dozens that work.

So, again:

Title: Re: HELP! black screen bugs

I'm pretty much out of ideas, then -- I'm not sure what to tell you.  Something on your machine is likely messed up or interfering with it, but I don't have any idea what.  If you're worried it might be the Steam install simply not downloading correctly, you can download the demo directly from our site and see if that runs.  If so, you can use the CD Key from Steam to unlock the full version from that demo and play outside of Steam.

The engine used for AVWW is the same one we use for AI War and Tidalis at this point in the loading process, and so there's well over 200k copies out there and this is the first such issue I've ever heard of where it wasn't some sort of antivirus or similar.  I'm not really sure what to tell you beyond that.

Well, that isn't true -- there was one other case where someone was having huge amounts of trouble with this game and they couldn't get it to work.  They were running the game in windows on a Mac running bootcamp.  Apparently that wasn't working out very well due to some issue with bootcamp.  Simply switching back over to OSX on that machine and running the native OSX version of the game rather than running the windows copy in a virtualized environment would be the fix there.

Actually, considering the April 20th timestamp on that output.log, I think it really WAS from your machine, and got deployed with the installer :)

On the issue itself: from an earlier message it looks like it's trying to run in windowed mode (fs:0), perhaps try it in fullscreen (changing IsFullscreen:0 to IsFullscreen:1 in settings.dat, though not sure if this install has a settings.dat yet) ?

Ooh, yeah.  I missed that.  It looks like it's not even getting to the point of generating an output.log then.  I suggest that perhaps running the game directly rather than from Steam might help overcome that.

At this point we have no idea about this particular machine, then, it sounds like.

Generally speaking, windowed mode is far safer since it doesn't require any sort of direct hardware access.

Could you take a screen shot of your Task Manager Processes tab? We could then see what's running on your comp at least.

Ooh, yeah.  I missed that.  It looks like it's not even getting to the point of generating an output.log then.  I suggest that perhaps running the game directly rather than from Steam might help overcome that.

At this point we have no idea about this particular machine, then, it sounds like.

On the issue itself: from an earlier message it looks like it's trying to run in windowed mode (fs:0), perhaps try it in fullscreen (changing IsFullscreen:0 to IsFullscreen:1 in settings.dat, though not sure if this install has a settings.dat yet) ?

Generally speaking, windowed mode is far safer since it doesn't require any sort of direct hardware access.
i have ran it directly several times all resulting in the same results

This is all I can find: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIGABRT

Are you playing this under Unix?

Strange. I'm playing this under Linux, and I never got this particular issue. The only thing I have ever gotten was a GC get thread context failed or something like that error.

Granted, the Nvidia drivers for Linux are rather iffy, especially around intense 3D stuff or power saving stuff.

EDIT: Wait, Mac OSX uses some weirdo hypervisor thing, part of it based on some offshoot of BSD right? This mean that SIGABRT would be a valid signal in OSX, right?

Could be, yes -- in which case this could be the game running under boot camp on a Mac, or Parallels desktop or similar, which has been demonstrated not to work by another player.  But given there's a native OSX version that works perfectly well, that would be the alternative in that case.

Just a wild idea, but could you try downloading the AI War demo or Tidalis demo and see if you see the same issue with that?
That might help to narrow down the cause.

Could you take a screen shot of your Task Manager Processes tab? We could then see what's running on your comp at least.

Could you try this? It would at least give us a glimpse at what else might be resident.  That, and a dxdiag would also help.

For showing us the running application:
Code: [Select]
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select "Start Task Manager."

Click the "Processes" tab and resize the window so that we can see everything (no scroll bar).

With the Task Manager as the active window, hold Alt and press "Print Screen" on the keyboard

Open up Paint and press Ctr-V to past the screenshot of the Task Manager into it.

Save the resulting image and attach it here.

For getting the DxDiag information
Code: [Select]
Click the Start Menu

Go to "Run" (in Windows 7 it's the "Search Programs and Files" text box)

Type:
     dxdiag

Press enter

A window will appear labeled "DirectX Diagnostic Tool"

Click the "Save All Information" button.

Attach the resulting file here

If you could scroll that Process tab down to the bottom, and take a second one? That would be great!
One more thing, if you could, increase the column size, so all the text is visible as well?

Yet one more thing :) You can shrink the "User Name" column down to nothing, so you won't have to edit the screenshot. I forgot about that the first time, sorry.

Looks like that ACDaemon.exe thing might be the problem right there: http://www.file.net/process/acdaemon.exe.html

https://www.google.com/search?q=acdaemon

But there's also a number of other processes there that look suspicious to me; I think there's quite a good argument for running multiple strong antispyware tools on the PC.

dmhkcore.exe as well: http://www.spydig.com/file-diagnosis/dmhkcore-exe.html (or http://www.file.net/process/dmhkcore.exe.html)

Looks like there's all sorts of stuff running on this machine that could interfere with all sorts of things.  The above one comes preloaded on Samsung machines it sounds like, but it sounds like it's also a vector for attack.
