Stuck on "Finding Internet Servers"
« on: May 10, 2012, 04:20:22 am »
I recently started using a new ISP and installed a new modem. Ever since, I cannot view the internet server list in multiplayer. Clearly this is an issue with my own internet, and not a problem with the game. However, I haven't had any problem with any other games I have, steam or otherwise. I've tried port forwarding, reinstalling the game, DMZ, disabling firewalls, rebooting etc. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can fix this, I would really appreciate suggestions.

I'm using AT&T U-Verse for DSL and I have a brand new Motorola NVG510 modem.

What happens when you try to view the server list?  It just hangs?

That's pretty odd, because if your game is connected to the Internet in order to get the beta updates there's no reason to think it would be able to get beta updates but not connect to get the list of servers.

Are there any errors being logged in your RuntimeData folder?

Beyond that I'd be first thinking of antispyware or antivirus software, since that can get suspicious of things making internet connections.

Yes, the problem is when I try to view the server list. The game doesn't hang or anything, it just has the message on "Finding Internet Servers" and nothing ever shows up.  Before I got the new ISP/router, the list came up almost immediately.
I tried turning off Window's Defender and disabling Window's Firewall, tried portforwarding  as well as setting the "IP Passthrough" setting in my router (which LOOKS like DMZ if I am reading it right). Nothing seems to do anything. Not seeing any errors in the game's logfiles or in the router's logs either.

I was looking around, and it looks like this particular router brand has something of a problem with DNS or something or another. It gives up too fast waiting for a responce or something. I have no idea if it's even possible for this to be the problem though, I'm not terribly well versed on the such things.

The port forwarding and such only applies when it is making inbound requests, so it really couldn't be that or any of the DMZ stuff.

You might simply try updating your router to the latest firmware if it's not already on there, and that might resolve it.  Often the factory-installed firmware is out of date by the time you get it.

You might also want to look for for any sort of application-level or application-layer filtering that your router might be doing.  If it's doing any of that sort of thing, or doing anything with QoS services, you may want to turn those off.  QoS is only useful if you have something like a direct VOIP service running through the router (through your ISP in other words, not through some service that is running independently of your ISP on your network).

If all else fails, and you think it's a DNS problem, you can always switch either your router or your computer to using OpenDNS.org as its server instead; it's fast and can be more reliable than a lot of ISPs.

I can't seem to be able to find any firmware update files for my modem. It's not terribly surprising though, as there is no documentation available for it either.

I don't THINK the router is doing any application-level filtering (although i'm not really sure what that is either). As far as QoS goes;  the router does have the option to do packet filtering, but that isn't enabled by default.

I tried switching my computer over to google's free DNS service (the router does not allow you to change any of the DNS stuff), but that didn't seem to help either.

I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point and the best I can figure is that AT&T and the router it makes me use is just a unredemable pile of garbage. If anyone else out there is using AT&T Uverse and/or the Motorola NVG510, and has or doesn't have this problem, I would love to hear about it.

I have UVerse, but they gave me a 2Wire modem. Normally, anything 2Wire makes breaks in under a year, but this one I've been pretty lucky with. Is the 3rd I've gotten from ATT though :)

I am able to find and connect to internet games just fine.

I used to have UVerse and a Motorola modem of a slightly older sort, but I was able to connect to things with no problem.  I'm really not sure what the problem would be here; we're using very similar methods for the server list as we are the beta update checks and downloads, and so it's not like your whole app is being blocked.  If the only thing that was changed was the ISP/router... I really am not sure what would be the problem either. :/
