Texture Packs don't work
« on: September 04, 2012, 06:29:42 pm »
I created a simple one character texture pack, replacing all the files of Dave with custom files of precisely the same size.

Problems.

1) When I change to this test texture pack, the screen reloads and the font disappears. I can't get the font back without restarting the game.

2) The custom image files are not recognized. I have a Dave as my character but instead of my custom images, I still see Dave.

3) When changing back to the blank option for a texture pack, the same thing happens as 1). The Font disappears and  I have to restart the program.

In case it matters, I got my copy from Steam and then used the game's autoupdater, yesterday.

I really don't like any of the sprite graphics for the human characters, I'd rather use 16-bit replacements, and work on replacing the rest with corresponding style, but I can't.

The font disappearing thing is a known issue with the workaround at the moment of just restarting your game.

When it comes to the actual texture packs themselves, I can assure you they work -- there's a Megaman pack that you can donwload on these forums that has an large amount of stuff replaced with classic 8bit graphics.  Most likely causes of this not working are either that you aren't using PNG files, have a typo in your folder names or file names, or are doing this on the wrong Dave.  Note that there are two Dave sprites, one with black hair and one with red.

And in terms of the sprites for the characters in general, you might be pleased to know we're currently in the middle of an art revamp for the entire game so you hopefully will like the end result a lot better. :)

Hope that helps!

Ah so its a nonsensical error.

Why does a texture pack need to be in texturepackfolder/images ?

A texture pack doesn't contain anything else but images.

Because it's mirroring the file structure of the game, since texture packs do in fact contain things other than images -- mainly particles.xml files, which are not in the images folder.  But also I figured that it would leave more flexibility for future additions to texture packs if the need later arose.

Interesting, does it allow for replacing any file in the Runtime? Could I go in and replace music or even Dialogue with my Texture Pack?

At the moment, no -- the only two things it reads at the moment are the particle definitions and the images.  But I was thinking ahead. ;)
