360 controller don't work
« on: April 26, 2012, 06:06:18 am »
My 360 controller don't work with this game. The analog sticks are not recognized, buttons work fine. The controller works fine in everything else I've played.

Do you have it set in the settings menu?  That might be why the game isn't recognizing the analog sticks.

I'm having the same issue with the xbox360 pad as well. Analog sticks are not working in this game specifically. I have set the game to control with the gamepad and loaded the gamepad keybindings with no luck.

For the X360 controller, go to "View And Edit Controls", "Edit" which command you want and select the binding for Gamepad/Mouse Axis for the analog as well as triggers. Gamepad Key for those that "click".

I have this exact same issue.  Wireless xbox 360 Gamepad with official MS usb dongle.  Controller works fine everywhere else.  The analog sticks and analog buttons (triggers)  do not appear to work.  windows report they are operating fine.

I am currently playing the demo from steam if that helps.  game version 1.2.

All the controls are fully configurable, so it definitely 100% can work.  There is a default settings option in there for 360 controllers, but you may need to try the Logitech option if you have a different model of 360 controller.  The model I tested with was a very recent model of wired 360 controller, so it's possible that the analog axis mappings are simply different between that and older 360 models.

Which is no matter -- you can set the buttons, the axes, etc, all as custom as you want directly in the game.  But if the default 360 controls don't work, I suggest starting from the default Logitech controls as they might work quite well.

Hope that helps!

I tried mapping , but the game simply doesn't recognize the analog input.    I have tried remapping into both key and axis  but when i get to the point where the game is waiting for a controller state change to detect the input .. it never recognizes them .. i move both sticks and flip both triggers and it just sits there

if i hit the dpad , start select, click either analog stick, face buttons, or the bumper buttons (ie all the digital,on/off buttons) it DOES detect those presses.

I've seen a few random mentions in various places (reviews section, various forums, etc) that this occurs and a few of those few mention a wireless controller.     Is it possible the driver is presenting an entirely different interface for the wireless controller?

this is the exact thing i have (as far as i can tell from pictures)

edit:  Yes i have the game setup for "gamepad action"

edit 2:   Sorry i misspoke, The dpad will not map either.  not to axis or key.  Also reworded things a bit for clarity

Make sure that you don't try to map the d-pad or axes as gamepad buttons -- you want to map those as "Gamepad Axes" under the game.  It's the same thin in both cases.

Yes .. i am mapping to axes

Also, i just tried the ps3 controller using the "motioninjoy" drivers. http://www.motioninjoy.com/wiki/en/help

Same behavior ....  controller works in other games, but no analog detection in avww ..  so there must be something wrong more globally.

I am using windows 7 64 bit. Ill try running it in admin mode and see if anything changes... maybe it is a permissions issue.

Hmmm, that's really odd indeed.  It's the unity 3D engine, so it's really standard in terms how that engine detects axes.  If it isn't picking it up, it's possible (though unlikely) there's a bug in the unity engine, or there's something else amiss with the drivers or something in the specific cases here.  Generally speaking I don't think most people have had a problem with gamepads working (aside from them working too well -- having their character moving when they weren't expecting it to, because they were playing with the keyboard but their gamepad was upside-down under their desk or something).

One idea strikes me: the game is calibrated to by default do noise canceling of a certain amount on the axes.  This is needed because of the slight jitter in most analog sticks, and older sticks have more jitter.  So we made that adjustable.  It's possible that your gamepad is giving only output that is too low and which is all below the threshold of the noise canceling, and thus is being ignored.  If that's the case, then you could simply turn down the noise canceling to 0 and see how that helps.

tried that also :( .. no change.  I'll probably do some searching on the unity engine and see if there are any tweaks/gotchas/etc. that anyone is aware of.

Ok i fixed it.  I don't know if there was a MS driver update or not but i did a overkill driver reinstall and things started working.  Unfortunately i didn't write down things and it has been a while so i cant remember exact names for things. let me know if you need clarification and ill try to put together a better how to when i have time.

First open device manager.  find the usb host/controllers/devices block.  the wireless reciever does NOT show up under the HID section

Plug in your wireless transmitter and watch for things to appear.  select it/them and delete them.

click "scan for new hardware" from the toolbar.

Driver will reinstall.

Re-calibrate the controller and try mapping axes in AVWW again.

if that doesn't work unplug all usb devices except the wireless reciever and delete everything under that folder.  This could be dangerous if you are running system drives or critical hardware over usb so be smart about this.   This will uninstall the drivers for your usb hub as well.   More than likely you will need to have the install disk/download the drivers manually and could cause yourself some pain if you don't know what you are doing here.

Before you decide to try the last step note,  I ended up liking the keyboard controls better. ;)

edit:  wanted to repeat I'm using windows 7 which is a lot more forgiving when reinstalling drivers than XP.   the same procedure should work in xp but you might have to locate this possibly mythical driver update manually.
