How do you guys deal with the random falling ice blocks? I think it is stupid but might there be a way around it?

That's actually the ice pirates. You can see them on the world map, they fire on any tile within a certain range of themselves. You can send NPC's from the village out to destroy them but otherwise I personally find they stop journey to perfection in their range.
