[MAP] Boss Room: Tower Link

I made this boss room using the new lava/water/sky tools. Although they really are only decorative in this map. I figure this map is like if you had two towers and this could be a small room connecting the two, so the sky is visible above and below. (while the middle area is connected to the building.

It's a small 21 X 43 map.

I've tested all three current bosses with the map and they all work fine. Even the large skelebot has just enough room to move about and can still be a threat. (you'd probably be fighting it from above but it can still shoot up at you) There's enough space to hide from attacks too.
 
Hope this one is ok? It might be pushing things a little in terms of size. I feel it works well though.

I wouldn't want to see one much smaller, but, I think it works. I like the idea of some of the boss fights not being giant epic battles with lots of room to move. I think some of them being a close-in brawl is a good thing. Nice job. Thanks.

I'll try my hand at making a large custom room next time.

I think I just naturally head towards making small rooms in the map editor.

There's a ton of large rooms in there now. Frankly, I appreciate any types of rooms you want to make. If you are drawn to making small rooms, go ahead and make small rooms. :-)

Indeed -- definitely a cool one, too.  Though, I will say it can't be used quite in its current form, because there's no 8x8 section of background wall above an 8-tile-wide platform.  Just slightly raising the upper area's size by 2 (it's currently 6 high) would do it, or widening one or both of the sides.  But definitely seems like a cool room. :)

Oh, whoops -- I told you wrong on the thing at the top, sorry.   :-[  There's still not 8 tiles of uninterrupted floor, which means that quite often bosses will just fail to spawn and the room will be instantly-completed.  I just had to update a number of my old maps just yesterday to fix them from doing that, too.

So the top needs at least 8 pieces of floor then?

Does it have to be a full 8 or can it be 4 & 4? So I can just widen the top area by one tile (and widen the bottom by a tile too just to be clean)

Well, the bottom has enough floor, so as long as the ladders aren't in the way stuff could spawn down there.  So the room should be okay, the only question is those ladders.

Depending on the size of the boss, you'll see smaller bosses spawn at the top or in other parts, too.  You'd just never see the largest possible bosses (none of which are even in yet, anyway) seed in the top area.   To have the very largest kind of boss seed, you need 8 tiles wide all in a row, and then 8 tiles of space above.  But smaller bosses can and will seed in smaller areas, so it really varies.

My main thing is just always making sure that there's at least one 8x8 area in the map somewhere, and there is now.

Maybe the answer would be to have certain bosses just not be allowed to spawn in rooms of a certain size?

I mean I can't imagine being able to fight an 8X8 boss in that room very effectively even if it can actually spawn in there.

Well, there may be a desire to have some smaller rooms at some point that you fight bosses in, and for overlords we do in fact use different rooms that are much larger at minimum.  But the rule for the general boss rooms is 8x8 bosses and down, hence all of them being a certain size.  It's possible we might introduce a smaller category of boss rooms further down the line, but right now these are the only categories of boss rooms we have.
