No shade here on the Fallen Spire. I was holding that up as one of the biggest and best innovations that Keith brought to the game, that really kind of kept things interesting and fresh after the base game was getting bloated in those later expansions.

Neither he nor I wanted to recreate the Fallen Spire in AI War 2, but having narrative quest driven bits were something that were always sort of a stretch goal. After a lot of years on other projects and this one, I kind of see that as a mandatory way of providing structure for the average player now. I talked about it more in the podcast, but yes making it an organic thing that you can choose to do later in the game when you're realizing you're doing well is something I want to be possible. You shouldn't have t know you're going into that game mode at the start, it should be something that you decide... when you feel like it as you play.

Which is not to criticize the original Fallen Spire, but just to state what my goals are in this game.

Thanks for responding Chris.
Your follow-up read was interesting and I'm looking forward to the playable test and/or any other docs you want to send our ways. As you note, the document is already out of date in some of the minutia since you've already made several further iterations. So back to waiting for the next release. ;)

I'm also going to jump in here and say that the new design looks rather promising.  I do have a few selfish questions.

1)  Can I hope to have input on the starting fleet that's associated with my backer ark?
2)  What's the plan for mercenaries?  Would they be something like a new fleet that doesn't replenish, and can be destroyed?  Just basic units that can be combined wit your other fleets, etc?

Beyond those, I'm excited to give the new game a try.  As one of the people who always played a high-AIP brute force smashfest of a campaign in AIWC, I'm curious to see if the AIW2 design can break me of that habit and enjoy having the habit broken.  Or if I can find a way to subvert your design intent and continue to be an amoeboid force eating an ever larger blob and defending my territory, making chokepoints, etc.

There are a number of handcrafted Fleets planned, as well as, far as I know right now, automatically generated ones. What Ark is it you have? I only know of the currently usable 5 + Belle Prime. If you note what kind of things you want I could put those in when the time comes?

2)  What's the plan for mercenaries?  Would they be something like a new fleet that doesn't replenish, and can be destroyed?  Just basic units that can be combined wit your other fleets, etc?

Right now they stay as they are. They don't use the Fleets mechanic. They do however start at Mark 1 now and instead copy what upgrades you have, i.e they match it, so they can get better over time. There have been ideas floated around for the Dyson and Dark Spire ship downloads to actually give you a full Fleet, which seems a bit relevant here.

I'm Belle Prime.

As to composition, Belle's my cat's name, so I was thinking something feline.  Sneaks up, hits hard, gets away.  Not much staying power, but good on an ambush strike.

Oh yea, that's exactly the theme (Cloaking, Ambush etc) all the Belle Prime Fleets have. There was talk of getting it in this update, so I had prepared some.

Awesome.  I'd talked to Chris/Keith about my thoughts on Belle Prime earlier (months ago), so I'm glad it got communicated over to you.

Oddly all I heard of it was it was a Hacking theme or something like that. I just figured, that sounds sneaky so give it that kind of unit set.

I went through my email, and here's the relevant portion from one of the redesign docs...

I'd like a hacking mechanic for Belle Prime. And the ship to have an ambush hunter theme. Cloaked, massive firepower, but not terribly durable.

If you PM me an email address, I can forward a larger thread with Chris for inspiration.
