Reverse AI War? Please don't do that.

At least, not right now. Arcen already has two straight experiments, one of which never got released and the other which was pulled from sale.

Yet you don't even know what it is.   ;D

I'll tell you a bit about it.  You play as the [redacted]. You [redacted].  It's kinda like [redacted].

Maybe I won't tell you about it after all.  :D

The problem is, this kickstarter hasn't even ended yet, we have all put in so much work, and then you read comments like that, that make you question the commitment- like maybe Chris doesn't even want to make this game. Why should we all be busting our humps trying to sell this campaign when he's going to do that?

You're right, I don't know all the particulars of this new project proposal. But I think it's inappropriate at this time to do that in the middle of the campaign.

He's being realistic and throwing options out there. If the current AI War 2 Kickstarter fails, we need to fund AI War 2 another way. Making a smaller game, even a smaller game funded Kickstarter, is one way to build capital.

Oh right, I forgot Cinth was involved.

Wait, what?  New project proposal?  What's this now?

I just realized I have no clue what you guys are talking about here.

Chris dropped a bomb shell on the Ai War Kickstarter page:
Quote:"That other project that the kickstarter mentions (in passing, waaaay down at the bottom in the budget section) is actually something that is basically codenamed Reverse AI War.  That's not its real name.  We may be able to get publisher funding for that one (which is more palatable to me), or do a separate kickstarter for that one, based off a free playable WebGL version.  Basically in this you play as the AI and you [redacted].  It's simpler, less expensive to make, and something I've wanted to do for a while.  I was going to work on it after my part of AI War II was done, but we could swap the order of those around.  But this could divert AI War II's general support and also lead to a delay in my parts of AIW2 if we're actually doing the full scope of what this kickstarter would entail.  So this is more for if we do a split kickstarter, mainly."

Plus it seems Arcens situation is not as helpless as we tought.

I'm ok with it being a Thing and getting posted, but it really needs to be put somewhere more visible than the KS updates.

KS updates is "hey backers, we're doing X" it doesn't actually draw more interest.

....huh.  Well that's... a thing.  I'm not going to question their decision on that one too much... but I do kinda agree that this just doesn't seem the right time to announce it.  While I know it's not meant as such, it kinda gives the impression that there will be a lack of focus on AI War 2, which is the "big one".   Kickstarter backers want to see declaration of total focus on what they're backing, right?

Bah, I just wish the blasted KS would hit the goal already.

Actually, it's rather pushing me in the opposite direction.
Sounds like they gave up on the kickstarter more than anything else.

I already have serious worries about the tone of this forum and the comments that sound quite a lot like you're expecting a failure, and it's not really getting any better now.

The problem is, this kickstarter hasn't even ended yet, we have all put in so much work, and then you read comments like that, that make you question the commitment- like maybe Chris doesn't even want to make this game. This, completely right.

And that's another problem. Note Cinth, I'm not targetting you in particular with this - you're just the latest example. But, during the month before the KS, there was a lot of discussions and transparency about how AI War II was made. These last days, there was a trend of topics by people from Arcen about stuff going "inside" but with "we won't tell about it" variations on it. Some teasing's fine, but IMO it's getting overboard, especially when it's talking about changing stuff that's in the design doc or "revealing" that you're actually NOT focussing on the KS the whole time.

First one being a proof that the project's not ready - bad for publicity - and "alpha-time" is kind of supposed to take care of that, and second one, I spoke about above.
Planning for other options ? Good. Speaking about it publicly during a PR campaign ? Not good. Speaking at length about doing stuff that's unrelated to the KS while it's not already successful ? Not very good.

Aye, same here. The assumption that the whole thing will fail seems to have set in pretty hard.  The good bit is that for the most part nobody has gotten into any big arguments out of anger/frustration about any of this yet , but... honestly I keep expecting that to happen.

As for the bit about transparency, ehhhhh.... I'm honestly not sure what to think about that one.  I can sorta see reasons both for and against it.

Actually no. It's only fun for the 2-3 people involved. Everyone else just sighs and rolls their eyes at the smug "neener neener I know something you don't neener neener".

yea I have to agree with you there from what I've been keeping up on in terms of ks related stuff here.
to be fair on them though all of Chris's most receant haven't been going fantastically what with stars never being released starward not breaking even and raptor being pulled from steam so that's probably why the pessimism that is here at the moment exists.
