The "real" fix for making things take up less space would be to have a GUI Scale option.
Which, given everything is already in percentages, adding that in later would be easy.

I feel like overall the build menu actually feels pretty good, and the conversation has shifted more to general UI discussions (gui scaling, Econ display, and so on). I do agree that it would be nice to have the color of the icons tweaked a bit, but this is a pretty low priority in my book compared to things like "Making settings changable in game", "Multiplayer", "being able to change my player color/set AI difficulty" and "Having a Tutorial".
