Strategy against Macrophages

My current campaign just ended when 4 enraged macrophages MK II started an attack against my homeworld. Each of them had a strength of about 42 which I think is a bit high. But what is your general approach against the Macrophages? Do you have to kill their nests early? Or does it help to keep their numbers low? I played on diff 7 and intensity 5. Any suggestions?

Macrophages won't enrage until a given Telium has spawned a bunch of them. So you want to kill normal Macrophages if you can to prevent too many from spawning.
