I mean the average kickstarter still is on about 50 doller (more than 2 time the worth of the game))

Considering the average level of crap the AAA market forces down our throat for $60 a pop?  I'd say the value of you dollar goes a lot farther herre than in EA's pockets :p   The average pledge is closer to $40.
447 hours on AI War: Fleet command. I spent $20 on the main game, and I think $10x6 on expansions. That's $80. $80/447 hours = 18 cents an hour roughly. That's what my fun in AI War cost me. 18 cents an hour. Pretty good bargain for a game :D

Edit: Apparently my friend who introduced me to AI War needs a week to get his money so he can buy it. Hopefully there's plenty more people like that to keep this ball rolling.

There won't be another Kickstarter campaign. If this doesn't succeed, Arcen goes dark and scales development waaaaaaaaay back until Chris has the funds to self-publish something larger. Not to be all doom-y, but this is it.  :)

I know I have read that. The problem is only this is a bit like threatening fans...
I would much rather see "manipulative" community goals instead of having to rely on pressing as much money out of the hardcore fans as possible...

(I am sure they don't do this deliberately they are nice people, but this is exactly the way it is going... I mean the average kickstarter still is on about 43 doller (more than 2 time the worth of the game))

Maxim #70: Failure is not an option, it's mandatory. The option is whether or not to let failure be the last thing you do.

Pledged 65$. Will see if I can push it higher later in the month in order to get the soundtrack too.

Edit: Just noticed that the 100$ is already closed. I guess I will get the soundtrack after release then  :o

Hm, why are the tiers above 100$ so very much limited by number. You will run out of them very fast.

I posted it on the kickstarter comments page, but it probably bears repeating here: I've been watching the Wasteland 3 "fig" and they've apparently partnered with a service called "crowdox" which appears to let one process pledges via paypal. Might be worth investigating to bring aboard all those folks whose only option is paypal (and, frankly, I've seen quite a few people post something to that effect).

We've looked into using Crowdox or Backerkit or another similar service, but Chris has decided that he wants to wait on using that until we are either guaranteed to be funded or are funded. This is what he had to say about it (Copied from the FAQ):

So, this might sound crazy, but how does Arcen do in foreign markets?

I know that there were some articles about how foreign markets are under-represented in English language games. The big reason was lack of localization of language. Given that most of the language is safely being placed in an external language file, doing translations and localizations for other languages should be relatively straight forward. (note: I have no idea how well it would work out for languages that have a different formatting structure than english, e.g., Japanese, Chinese, Latin, Hebrew, etc).

So, perhaps add a funding tier for $X that is: Localize AI Wars to a language of your choice so we can share with everyone. Perhaps give them a fancy title or badge and make them the X language Representative/advocate. They would also get to help with the localization and get a fancy credit in the credits. Maybe even offer other tiers that allow localization for previous Arcen games.

Costs - No idea. I'm not sure how much would be acceptable to do crowd sourced/forum based translation assistance or having to hire real outside translators. I know we have several people who are non-native english speakers, and I know most of us love to contribute our $0.25 on everything. I also don't know how much extra programming it would take, especially if non-english style formatted languages implemented. I just don't know enough to say anything useful.

Arcen has code to handle the game being localization capable but I don't think any title has ever shipped with a language other than English available.

Steamspy => Geography would more or less give you numbers on how foreign markets are being done. I don't want to create an account there nor pay (if needed) though.

Costs for localisation are basically simple, there is the following parts to do:
- switch the font / character set to something that's capable of handling foreign characters (for example, for French: éèàùçà... and a few others like â ê ô î û). Multiple solutions can do this, like having a separate character set for each language or switching to a more memory intensive character set that handles more of them).
- change all buttons with text on it to make them text-based.
- Have the code automatically resize itself / the button depending on the size of the text itself.
- set-up an interface in the game code that reads from a source (xml file, key-based property file... whatever). So it can easily be updated.
- bonus step, if necessary, implement different systems to handle plurals. Emphasis on the plurals, with an S, as some languages have multiple plurals. Also to manage genders if encessary between tooltips (completely foreign concept to english). Which basically means that additional care must be taken for different tooltips to NOT reference each other if possible.

The translation itself is next to nothing compared to making a scalable UI. That said, as most of the game is moddable, most of the elements in the game should already be somewhat scalable. Costs are "fairly" low (maybe 2-3% of total project costs if done from the start. However... if done later, costs can rise ten-fold.

Making people pay to localize the game ? Not good publicity with a 300k budget. I'm against that idea.

All of that has already been done.  The part that hasn't been done is the actual translation.  AI War doesn't have it, but every game since Bionic Dues does (just search your install files for a_bionic.xml, you'll find it inside RuntimeData/Languages/en)

One guy has even supplied language files for French for AI War (it has a language system, but different than bionic+)
