Kickstarter Backer Tier Modifications
« on: September 13, 2016, 12:47:14 am »
So I made some changes to a copy of the KS backer tier document and wanted to know what everyone thought about it:

I like it, it's more "spaced out" than the previous proposal.

One side not though... the people "paying" for "large packs" might or not have multiple friends to give the game to.
I seem to remember a feature in another kickstarter where basically a copy of the game is some kind of "pack" that could be bought multiple times. Could this apply to this proposal ?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Do you mean you want tiers without the extra copies, do you want the extra copies to be distributed a certain way, etc.?

I think the "more spaced prices" is better.

I'm sad there is no unlimited tier above $100.

Hum. both. I'll rephrase.

Here is the kickstarter for planetary annihilation.

They handle "additional keys" to the game as add-ons. With rising costs for earlier accesses. Do you think it matches the AI War II campaign ?

I find that 15 dollars for early access cheap, even for early access. Is it intentional every tier gets early access?

Also, early access should be renamed, or at least in parenthesis, say beta. Just as common in the terminology from my experience. Like wise "earlier then early access" should be called alpha, for the former is really confusing.

Difference between 120 and 200 dollar tier? I see two extra keys and an mk IV badge but that there is more for 80 dollars right?
Life is short. Have fun.

"Early Access" has a specific meaning, though. It means you get the game when it goes into Early Access on Steam. So, there won't be a case where someone who pledged for the game *can't* play it while someone else can just go to Steam, buy it, and start playing immediately. People on Kickstarter will know exactly what it means. "Beta" doesn't carry the same meaning, because as a term it's been diluted severely by companies like Google having public products in beta for 5 years.

As such, "earlier than early access" also means something more than "alpha", although it's somewhat of a mouthfull. I'd probably call it "pre-Early Access" or something like that instead, but the meaning is the same either way.

"closed alpha"? Or "private alpha"?

In the main document I've made a variety of these changes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HxAcl42XyqRyMf9mtU6ZgBw5XHoKao1jrYUgDMMS0no/edit#

I also really like the term "during private alpha" -- nice one Pumpkin.  And Tridus nailed it on why I'm using the term early access there.

I suppose this could be a game where the price of the early access build is higher than the 1.0 price -- like Prison Architect did or whatever.  Hmm, that is interesting.

Changes!

1. I've added a Planned Pricing section that notes that the EA price will be higher than the 1.0 price.  Special thanks to chemical_art for particularly inspiring this.

2. This then let me insert new $25 and and $30 tiers, and bump the previous $35 tier to $40, and what was $45 back to $50 where it was before today.

3. What was $60 is now $65, and then what was $70 is now $80.

4. I renamed a lot of the mark tiers since now we have more of these gradations, and the topmost levels are no longer mark levels at all, but instead are alien race names.  Spire are the top two, and then Zenith below that for now.  Seems fitting, and better than just keeping the mark levels going up.

Overall there are more midlevel options for backing now (in the under-$50 range), and the most attractive basic option is 25/30 instead of 15/20, which  is probably a Big Deal in terms of the number of backers we'd need for this to happen.

Thank you!  And yeah, I recall you were actually talking about that quite a bit.  Sorry about not listening before. ;)

I know there's a lot still going on in the other thread that I've not remotely caught up on.  I still need to get in there and work on updates from that at some point before too long.

Dungeon Defenders 2 has been working that way.  It's a free to play game, but when it first hit EA, you had to pay $20 to get access (which came with $30 of premium currency, good for cosmetics only--so you were still getting a discount, but you couldn't "just play for free" like the game plans to be).

And I don't think people will be miffed at having to pay a higher price.  It's really $5 to say "I want this to be a thing."  Which for $5 isn't much more than pledging $5 and asking for nothing in return.  And lots of people do that.

Yep, agreed on that.  I've bought things under those sort of terms before, and felt fine about it.  I can't remember specifically what, but I know I have.
