Journals & Tutorials Audio
« on: December 09, 2016, 12:54:20 pm »
I didn't see anything in the design docs for this, but I could have over looked it. Is there any plan for adding a sound component to the Journals / text blobs of the Tutorial (in whatever fashion the new tutorials take) I realize you guys are fixing the UI scaling part that will help immensely with being able to read things. However, I was curious if any thought had been given to having the journals and tutorial windows have a 'play/pause' button in them that would have them read out for the player instead of having to read them ourselves.

I'm wondering only because after reading all the lore stuff Keith put in the update the other day I realized, I knew very little of the actual AI Wars lore. The biggest reason for this is because the main way to consume it is via journals, which you have to read. Which means you either pause the game to read them, or end up getting surprised when all of a sudden the AI is mocking you for losing a command station.  I'm not sure if it would fit budget wise, but has any thought been given into having these journals read? Even if it is just by the likes of the development team, not a professional voice actor.

I would enjoy having them voiced as well.  Although I can certainly understand how expensive that can get.

Diablo 3 actually did a horrible job with this...

They used to actually display journal text on the side then later on. Changed to only audio and you were forced to stand in town and open it to just read it.

The trouble? I am born deaf and don't have any speech hearing at all even with hearing aid. So if something new come up, I would have to stop whatever I was doing and open it up. Otherwise 45 minute later I would have completely forgotten all about it and never read it.

It might actually work well for that kind of game to go audio only on pick up. But then I would have to made time each time a new lore came up which was interrupting the flow of action.

I have a very similar problem being deaf in one ear, I can't listen to two conversations at once. So if I'm chatting with friends I usually pause the audio on a journal or something, then continue playing it afterwards.

The text window + audio controls are definitely what I was thinking as well to keep that dual comprehension method. I know many people play videos with music in the background as well that make audio only queues much less effective. I just think it would be neat to be able to have the journal playing as you go about your game play similar to how they did in things like boarderlands, but yeah I would want the text box to open up initially as well. (hopefully not taking up as much of the screen as in AIWC
