On top of that critical late game chokes really want some gate raiding support on the neighboring planets. Late game wave + hunter + warden + praetorian guard (I've seen this happen a few times and it isn't pretty) = 400+ threat fleet wrecking ball. The AI gets really antsy when you had to neuter the adjacent defense worlds to the AI core world because you're having to quickly destroy one or two guard posts and then gtfo because 5+ Dire Tethuida posts with a few dire shredder posts with a couple dire gravity posts for good measure just makes for a massive pain in the rear for a strikecraft heavy comp.

Basically on higher difficulties you don't have an option. You *have* to neuter immediately adjacent planets to critical locations before the AI can spice it up with an extra few turret nests and several hundred threat of ships.

Thank you, everyone. Based on your comments, I started an experimental game where I prioritize the destruction of guard posts in neighboring systems, particularly those with a rating of 4 or above.

Here are a few ideas for contextual tips:

  • You just purchased an upgrade of <technology> technology from level (2 or 3) to (3 or 4). There is  a technology vault on the map, which you could have hacked into to obtain this upgrade without spending science points
  • You just used a technology vault to upgrade <technology> technology from level (1 or 2) to (2 or 3). It is usually better to purchase low-level upgrades with science points.
  • Hacking triggers an AI response. Consider waiting until your material reserves are higher or you are able to minimize the risk of being overwhelmed.
  • Your energy levels are getting low. You would be able to buffer your reserves by converting one or a few Logistics command stations to Economic command stations.
  • Your energy levels are getting low. Many of your planets have a full outfit of dedicated frigates. You would be able to buffer your energy reserves by decommissioning a few if you can accept reducing the amount of defense they offer.

If you use the Tech Vault it doesn't increase the cost of the next upgrade.
