AI War 2 v1.309 Released! "Instigator Cheekiness"
« on: January 23, 2020, 10:37:01 pm »

Release notes here. This is a small one, mainly hotfixes.

  • The Devourer now eats the Trader, as it should.
  • Instigator bases now spawn much closer to you until 600 AIP, after which they can get fully cheeky again. Previously they could really mess with you at random starting at only 300 AIP.
  • There were a couple of brand-new bugs that you could run into thanks to the new pathfinding code, and those are fixed.
  • There were several longer-standing bugs that are also fixed.
  • The top-of-screen notifications for Cross Planet Attacks are more succinct and don't have a largely-useless subscreen.

More to come soon!

Please Do Report Any Issues!

If you run into any bugs, we'd definitely like to hear about those.

The release of this game has been going well so far, and I think that the reviews that folks have been leaving for the game have been a big help for anyone passing by who's on the fence. For a good while we were sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive on the Recent Reviews breakdown, but there have been a lot fewer reviews lately and so that has definitely had a material negative effect. Go figure. Having a running selection of recent reviews definitely is helpful, but at least we have a pretty healthy set of long-term reviews. If you've been playing the game and enjoying it, we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd drop by and leave your own thoughts, too.

More to come soon. Enjoy!

Problem With The Latest Build?

If you right-click the game in Steam and choose properties, then go to the Betas tab of the window that pops up, you'll see a variety of options. You can always choose most_recent_stable from that build to get what is essentially one-build-back. Or two builds back if the last build had a known problem, etc. Essentially it's a way to keep yourself off the very bleeding edge of updates, if you so desire.

The Usual Reminders

Quick reminder of our new Steam Developer Page. If you follow us there, you'll be notified about any game releases we do.

Also: Would you mind leaving a Steam review for some/any of our games? It doesn't have to super detailed, but if you like a game we made and want more people to find it, that's how you make it happen. Reviews make a material difference, and like most indies, we could really use the support.

Enjoy!

Chris

I spoke too soon. I just tried a Linked Ring map and it causes a crash (see attached).

Once this error occurs you can't change the map settings without quitting the custom campaign settings.

Its not a big issue, but something that might confuse people. I also noticed that it sometimes succeeded for different seeds.

Work around is to select quit and return to the screen again and ensure you don't set the map size to too low. The annoying part is more to do with having to reselect all you customisations.

One thing of note is that -- first up, we can prevent the divide by zero error without too much todo.  Let me know if yo need me to look into that, Draco.

The other thing is that minimum planet counts can be set  per map type, and it's possible that for linked rings they need a higher low-end cap.  If it periodically fails below 40 planets, then setting 40 as the new minimum would be a reasonable thing to do.  The only question is if it would later have even MORE rare fails at or above 40.   Or whatever the number is.

I think I know where the problem is, I just have to get the default minimum ring to build and return before doing a chunk of the math.
I'd tested it at low planet counts (10 and 15, specifically), but apparently didn't hit any seeds that do the div-zero thing. Mostly its just moving a couple of lines around, I just didn't have time yesterday (was board game night).

(And the big-no was more me being dramatic over the number of times I've had to fix the generator)

All makes sense!  And I'm doing (kid friendly) boardgame night tonight. :)

May I recommend Betrayal at the House on the Hill? I think it's ideal for young, impressionable minds ;-)

I think that one might have to wait a few years. Once the kids are old enough to be able to read the traitor/survivor rules on their own and understand them.
(IIRC, Chris's son is around 8? 10? years old now and I wouldn't try and make someone under the age of about 14 play Betrayal).

Oh. Yeah.
I moved those variables down and pushed to the svn.

It's up in my son's closet with the bulk of my board games. I've never managed to get a group to play it with me yet, because kids and lack of time.  But yeah it's tempting. ;)

I think that we'll probably go with Ravine at least to start.

The kids are 9 and 6, although only my daughter will be here tonight, so it will be her at 6 and then our friends' daughter who is 8.

Thanks for the push of those changes!

Not sure I remember that you had a daughter, but I was pretty close with my guess. One of those things where if you hadn't said explicitly, it was still clear that they were on the younger end of the spectrum.

Anyway, have fun.

The daughter is new in the last year -- stepdaughter, soon to be adoptive as well.  I'm the only dad she's known, and now I have two kids.  Second marriage is in a couple of months. So many life changes!

Game night was mostly a bust.  The kids were too tired, especially the friends' daughter.  We tried playing a few rounds of Wavelength, and that went pretty well, but mostly it fizzled.  We're going to try again tomorrow probably at some point.

My daughter was really bummed to not get to play Ravine, so fingers crossed.

Anyhow, yep you had the guess pretty darn close!

Ooooo. Boardgame discussion... Going off topic too. :D

My girls and I spent the weekend playing many. The one they liked the most was  'Stone Age'. Highly recommended.
