I like "support", and have everything look down on it is something I like too.

I would allow certain player assets to have an "elite" archetype, which the enclave starship and combat carriers would fit more, while their drones have the more conventional archetypes.

Would also support some civilian craft being of support types, although it's generally easier to give them inferior stats?

The archetype is (in addition to a packaged set of balance parameters) a shorthand for what an object does/is. Making a civilian craft a striker with really bad stats still leads to a civilian craft being given a military archetype. Its not about the stats per se, its about quickly indicating the purpose of the object. Carriers could be given a standard military archetype and its not that big of a deal really, but giving an object that doesn't have a weapon (or the capacity to spawn a weapon) a military archetype feels weird. And giving something that is clearly a ship structural also feels weird. Its absolutely an aesthetic consideration for a tiny subset of ships in the game.

Can I pop my head in and suggest artillery instead of archer? Just from a thematic perspective? I would have said sniper, but that could be confusing coming from classic as snipers proper are being removed.

I considered "artillery" myself, but I think they would be (1) confusing with bomber and (2) sniper-like units (let's say long-range fast-shell fragile units) wouldn't thematically fit under "artillery" while mechanically fitting under "archer".

However, the debate is open. One could argue that the Sniper Guard Post in AIW1 had the "artillery" hull type. Anyway, I don't support that name right now, but I won't be fiercely against if everyone else is enticed by it.
Please excuse my english: I'm not a native speaker. Don't hesitate to correct me.

Leaving artillery free now means we can use it later if more artillery like things appear (like the artillery golem, that is far more artillery than what's in the base game).
