Planet Names: Pronounceable?
« on: September 03, 2016, 02:25:19 pm »
A lot of the planet names in the default planet names list are really hard to pronounce, to the point that my friend and I would take a "close enough" joke pronunciation and rename the planet (some of which were not appropriate for all audiences).

I really think the Culture series had it right when it came to names.

(Yes, these specific suggestions are a joke: Culture has it's own unique..."texture" to its names).

AI War definitely needs names that are a little more readable!

I would be fine with new names if that meant I didn't have to hear that A-team joke one more time... #angrygrandpa
Life is short. Have fun.

As an aside, I'm so glad that Space Ex is using Culture names for its drones/ships.  They're so much cooler than exactly what it says on the tin, "Apollo 12." Gosh I wonder if that's going to the moon aka "Apollo."
(Greek/Roman gods are fine name for the planets and other astronomical bodies, but our ships need a different theme).

I made a custom planet names list using states and state capitols. I had to consolidate North and South Carolina, though; very confusing if the map gen uses both.

What I did for the planet names is just grab a list of normal system names (Alpha Cephei, Beta Cephei, Fomalhaut, Sirius, etc) and dump them into the alt planet names file. At the very least, please use actual words. Look at XCom and XCom 2 and how they named their operations.

I think my altplanets list is a giant mishmash of two seperate lists from here, plus Murdoch. Mostly to have pronouceable names.

(I should go through and make an altplanetnames.txt full of Culture ship names. So many of them are just so good.

You know, this is actually a thing.  I'm from South Carolina and people who should know that, keep saying I'm from North Carolina when they introduce me to new people.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.
