Just a simple toggle in the lobby. If enabled, the game is autosaved fairly frequently (probably every five minutes or so at least, maybe an instant save when certain things happen like a player loses a command station), and deletes previous autosaves each time this happens. A defeat deletes the save entirely. Ironman games are marked as such, so players can claim extra bragging rights if they win.
Doesn't need to be anything more than that. Xcom did it and people loved it.

Yes, please! I play almost everything on Ironman.
-
I believe they added this feature to AVWW, which seems like it was released forever ago now, but there was an option to have Ironman mode enabled which sadly never made it into AI War. I know it's kind of silly but I hope to see it in AI War 2.
-
Bionic Dues has it. And it doesn't seems to be hard to implement, even for AI War which already has autosave.
I strongly support this!
-
I don't think it's a good idea.
A good ironman save should be able to track on disk the position / movement of whatever the game is doing at any time. It requires a specific implementation to store whatever is in the game into uncorruptable saves, in real time. Which in fact is quite an achievement.
And, if you DO want to play "ironman mode", just don't savescum.

Sure. But if it's easy to implement, why not? There is no need to be against that idea: it's feasible or not.
-
Actually... yes, it does.
A game with a large ironman following does not attract the same people than the one that think that save-scumming is ok.
I think of AI war of "hey, I have this save, can you salvage this situation ? I failed 5 times already" type of game, rather than something else. And I don't want to lose that.
I don't go to x-com forums because of that. Too much of that "I don't save-scum, me real tarzan man, go die in a fire you savescummer s***" crap for my taste. Not all of them are like that but once it reaches critical mass... You'll get a few of those.
-
Would never use, but support your right to not need to exert self-control and delete a failed move.
-
Assuming creating savegames can be done quickly enough that it can autosave frequently, this would be something worth looking at. It appeals to a given crowd quite a lot and really doesn't detract from anyone else.
-

I find knowing that I can't savescum actually does make a difference in how carefully I play some games, although I have to focus enough in AI War anyway that it might not make that difference.
For the people who need to spit on the less hardcore, maybe you could put in a disclaimer (similar to bionic dues?) along the "are you sure?" lines, so it's at least clear that playing as ironman isn't supposed to be normal.

I support it as an option insomuch as it covers autosaves only. Having a realtime updating save would be extremely detrimental to performance.
