I couldn't help but notice that in the star maps uploaded on Kickstarter, there were lots of star system names taken from the Lost Fleet military science fiction series. Who of you is a Lost Fleet fan? Not a bad series...did you get any in-game ideas from there?

Hello there! I am a fan, after someone on the forums turned me onto that. I get a lot of awesome book recommendations from fans on here, which is a really nice perk. :)
Mostly the influences are subtle things like either planet names, or some of the dialogue references some lore-based tech that you could see the relationship to the original game with.

If you wait long enough, there'll be some Culture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spacecraft_in_the_Culture_series) references too. ;D
Have we done the custom planet names yet, Chris? I can't remember.
Either way, here was my shortlist:

"Sacrificial Victim"
"Clean That Up Before You Leave"
"Hence the Fortress"
"Spare Parts"
"Serious Callers Only"
"Contents May Differ"
"Someone Else's Problem"
"The Precise Nature Of The Catastrophe"
"Just a Smudge on the Sensor Screen"
I've got a similar list for AI type names, but I'm holding onto those for the moment.
I also thought about doing a list for mercenary squads, but given that I didn't feel up to pledging that high, I never bothered.
Some ideas...
"Somebody Else"
"Injury Time"
"Inappropriate Response"
"Don't Try This At Home"
"Clear Air Turbulence" (which is, itself, a reference (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_Air_Turbulence_(album))...as well as a joke owing to the fact that its a pirate vessel)
"Now We Try It My Way"

I haven't gotten to Culture yet, no. :)
I have not integrated the custom planet names, yet. Bear in mind that if there are jokey/funny ones, then those will be banished to the "outer rim" in some fashion. I certainly don't have a problem with names like that, but they can't be showing up all over the place or people won't take things seriously.

Oh, certainly understood.
I think its why I gave a list, pretty much "take whatever feels good."
Sacrificial Victim is a name I'd name one of my beach head worlds... :P
