Dual screen support : galaxy map on second screen ?
« on: September 14, 2016, 04:56:08 am »
Idea taken from supreme commander.

https://www.google.fr/search?q=supreme+commander+dual+screen&espv=2&biw=1446&bih=767&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjb1Z-Qvo7PAhWHthoKHbEuDIYQ_AUIBigB

As AI War has the galaxy layer and the "regular" layer, this could be a cool addition.

That feature was great in Supreme Commander. You had two completely independent viewpoints. Problem was that SupCom already was demanding on the GPU. With two full screen monitors, it assassinated computers. It wasn't until like 10 years later I could actually run it dual screen.

Yes it was cool =). But here 2 viewpoints seem a bit much... just hoping that galaxy map on the second screen does not assassinate the CPU. And, is doable code-wise (no clue about that).

No, wait...

This is an awesome idea and I would love to see it. I wouldn't imagine the galaxy map is too hard on the CPU, but being able to just glance at it instead of having to flip displays would be amazing.

Yeah, just having the map would probably be trivial as far as load goes. Coding-wise...not sure.

If we are doing dual screen support, i want to be able to see two planets at once. Thst way i can tell my raid starships to go to a planet, kill a data center, and return.

I had already been contemplating this, because unity has specifically added functionality that allows for things like this.  However, I'm not super-confident in how good their functionality on that is, and it seems to be fullscreen-only as a feature.  I'm also not sure it works on all OSes.

It's not something I want to even attempt for v1.0 because it's such a risky thing, but it is something that is increasingly feasible as the engine has evolved.  In terms of the coding, there would be some needed splitting done, for sure.

Right now in the "for later" list.

It's always been "Full screen only" even back in SupCom. I don't know of an easy way to make it dual window.

Well, that's an "Idea For Maybe Later", but one I would definitely bring back post v1.0!

There's a lot of things I would like to do post-1.0. :)

Actually, I just want the ability to select a unit, go to a different planet, and give that same unit orders.  Then I wouldn't need two screens.

I think Keith just had an aneurysm. ;)

In seriousness, that is likely never going to be possible mainly because of how things are structured so that the giant machine runs at all.  I'll probably eat those words at some point, but it will likely be a bit hackish... maybe.

I dunno.  I'll pass it to Keith, because I know this is a common request.

Well, I'm sure if I had that option, I'd send a lot more Raid Starships to their unobserved deaths; "oh, was there a missile guard post right between the wormhole and that data center? better build some more raid starships."
