I think a nice little touch to the game would be a daily/weekly/monthly seeded challenge map.  The arcen server would list a map/seed/starting position/enemy AIs/plots that would be the same for every player, then players submit their scores/how far they got/how long it took to the server automatically.

this would have a number of community benefits, like giving a common point for discussion and competing with your friends.  it could also be used to test balance or mechanics.

You see this on CivFanatics a lot with monthly challenges. It's a certain map and setup, and there's a competition to see how people do.
