Shield Bearer: Death by patch
« on: November 19, 2009, 03:30:41 pm »
Since ships do enormous damage to a force shield when firing out from under it, any group of any size of any tech level of shield bearer units is immediately reduced to 0 hp at the start of any battle. (They even damage themselves (!))

Was this the original intention?  They are worthless for any kind of assault, and their shield can't even be effectively used to defend turrets  :'( . Is this because of the change in the latest patch to force shield mechanics?

I'd suggest either that the bearer's shield NOT be damaged by outgoing fire (or at least only a small fraction of current levels), or that the shield bearer unit no longer be available to players. (quite the disappointing adv. science 'gift'... :-\ )

Supposedly they don't get damaged by fire from under them, but i have yet to confirm this myself. It's probably true though....

I still dislike that forcefields are at all damaged by Outgoing fire

Heres a fine idea to make this less annoying than it is (because it is really annoying and for the player invites microing shields to bring them out of fire-range, repair and bring them back in)

Instead of forcefields being damaged by outgoing fire forcefields drain 50% of damage from every shot fired from underneath them.  ::)

For both player and AI - this way forcefields would finally be (logically) the same again and have the same negative side-effects for both sides.

: I guess i should put that in suggestions.. too lazy  ;D

I am 90% positive that the force field bearers were not being damaged by outgoing fire, at least in the most recent versions that I was looking at.  I know that at one point in the past they were damaging themselves and other ships were damaging them, but that was fixed at some point before the present.  I think that was fixed before 2.0, but I am not 100% certain.

To be honest, eRe4s3r, I've never particularly liked that mechanic either -- I have always viewed it as a necessary evil, and have been hoping a better solution would occur to someone.  And lo!  Here comes yours. :)  I think that reducing power to 25% instead of 50% is a more effective number, but we'll see how that plays in practice.  This would be only for the blue player force fields, not the yellow forcefields of the AI, which I don't want to mess with the balance of.  Having force fields used as a "force multiplier" is something I have always liked for the AI, it makes for interesting gameplay, but it's not a good thing for human players as it is far too easy to abuse.  The AI is rulebound so that it never abuses it, but the human players are not.

I'm also making the other smaller force fields (like the force field bearers) now be yellow instead of blue, to show that they are also the kind that does not cause damage penalties.  Only the blue will, and no forcefields will be damaged by outgoing fire.

Can you also consider upping force filed caps a bit with this change?
Or it will be to much...

But I seem to be running quite fast out of them even for command station shielding purposes. But that maybe by design :D

Well let it never be said that boredom and random remarks don't produce tangible improvements ;D

I for one welcome our new non-shrinking forcefield protected overlords! ;)

Well, after you mentioned it, I found out that I was playing on an older version when I noticed my complaint... I haven't tried it in the newer version, but no one would know better than you, so that's that as far as I'm concerned. I'm just glad to hear that I'm not crazy!

And I definitely like the idea of damage reduction.  If your goal is to keep players from hiding units with weapons under blue force shields, that is definitely a good way to go. 0-50%? I can deal with that.
