Wow.. just wow
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:19:56 am »
Can you please do something to these planets and backgrounds? http://www.twitch.tv/chthonicone/b/389985906 look at that planet at 1 hour 21 minutes 36 seconds. LOOK at that planet.. oh my GOD it looks Horrible. I don't know what was the point of this downgrade. I've had planets disabled since the planet and star backgrounds update. Also the default nebulae intensity level is way too high. It's WAY too bright. Doesn't look very good on the Steam store page.

After turning down the intensity a good bit, IMO, they now look great. But yea, the new planets are a bit...too colorfully intense at their default settings.

Then the backgrounds look pretty good yes.

Yeah just a little bit.

How can anyone with a brain not understand this was a downgrade to the old planets? Why the hell was this garbage released and put into the official patch?

Well.. it's gray and it looks like cardboard. It might be a massive Egg Farm. http://static3.depositphotos.com/1000693/112/i/950/depositphotos_1121296-Egg-Carton.jpg

Getting a serious feeling of déjà vu from this thread.

Are you still seeing that kind of color shifting (as in Kahuna's screenshot above) in 6.021?  I don't see in code how it could be using the HSV shader that created that... "interesting" effect, because we disabled that.  But maybe something else is going on.

I don't think it is so much the strange, almost glitch like color pallets sometimes produced, especially when the HSV shader did those "interesting" effects.
I think it's more of the fact that at the default intensity, the colors are so bright and contrasting (even when using a pallet you could conceivably see on planets) that it is a bit too distracting for a background object.
Again, IMO, the new planet graphics are great, but are turned up a little to bright and contrasting on the default settings.

Just remembered this coming up before  :)

Just thought I would dig up the old thread and link it here to the new discussion.

Planet in Kahuna's screenshot is NOT normal.

Something's up with your GFX card or something.

I think this.

It is like the colors are being misinterpreted or something. I would remember seeing those colors, but I don't, but the spreading of colors I do recognize.
Life is short. Have fun.

The planets in the game did actually look like that (in some cases) at one point during the development of AS.  But we turned off the HSV shader (because Kahuna showed us screenshots like that).  So my question is if this is still happening to some people.  It's possible there's some bug causing the HSV to still be used.

x4000 said it's not a bug and closed the case and fixed it only after TechSY730 agreed it's darn ugly.
THAT is now fixed but it's not in the official patch.. so the screenshot in that bug report^^ can be the first thing a new player sees when he/she starts the game.

These planets are about as bad as the planet in the bug report

This one is pretty bad too

They're massive, fill the screen and they're low resolution. It also looks like someone has been messing with the brightness, gamma, contrast and color saturation.

"Oohhh but herp a derp I kind of like these planet" enlarge the image by clicking it and/or download the image and view it in an editor and zoom a little bit. In-game they fill half of the screen.. almost.

This is what I mean
This is an "AI War planet version of my desktop wallpaper"
