Won my first game!
« on: October 06, 2014, 09:47:26 pm »
Wow. After countless restarts as patches came out, or DLC's, or just I was experimenting and got myself in a pickle, I finally played a game from start to finish with only one time going back to a previous save (and that only because I was tired and not paying attention and attacked the wrong world).

So, this is gonna seem pathetic for the real experts but it's a win on

AI lvls 5/5 (Vanilla/Vanilla)
Lazy AI
No Waves

*winces*

Yeah, I suck because I have so much to learn, but it was fun to discover more and more of this game and how it's quite a bit more complex than just build-attack-rebuild-attack again. Which is great, the former would get truly dull in a hurry.

Now to get rid of the no waves and lazy AI and MAAAAAYBE go to lvl 6/6 and see if I can survive!

Congrats! Welcome top the 5% (of people who've played long enough to do that)!

(No really, look at the Steam global stats)

Where would one see these stats?

It's interesting to hear that few actually complete a game. I like games that take a while to get through. Hence my enjoyment of civilization, Europa Universalis and the like. I wonder if some buyers think that the game is one with a much quicker start-to-finish progression, and are disillusioned with the time investment to complete a campaign.

Congrats indeed!

I think with players it really varies on why they don't finish.  I know that we've had a number of forum members here in the past who were super active in the community for a year or more, and then suddenly say "I won for the first time!" to my surprise.  One of our most active long-term members for the first three years of the game's development NEVER won a campaign.

Honestly I think for a lot of people it's more about the journey than the destination.

For me that's true I only finished one game on 7 but I never finished many more as I was waiting for the game to go official once more so there would not be so many changes, I had fun in the beta but I wanted to wait until its was considered balanced but even now some people think the game is, others do not. Also the main player I play with is newer to ai war and wants to learn the game before getting in a new beta as official updates are to just fix engine issues and make the game more stable. So in the next beta of AI War I may not be on these forms at least the AI War forms as much.

Edit: Also I am not really an achievement person and just like having fun in the game I earned some but getting achievements is not a priority for me.

I got mine by playing against two Turtle types and starting the game with 8 out of 10 planets. :P

(Still took me three tries)

I've been something of an "advanced novice" or "brave newbie" on this game for years. Don't feel bad. I vacillate between playing barebones games over a few months, to playing more advanced games (often quitting halfway through) over the course of a week or two. I'm a far cry from the experts around here, but I have fun, and I feel I know the game about as well as I want to.

AI War's remarkable in that its pacing and difficulty are so customizable. Figuring out how to do that can be tricky without prior experience, though, and daunting.

I'm currently turtling my way through the Beginner 2 campaign, which is basically a few steps up from where you are right now. I have a newborn, so this fits the sporadic 20-minutes-a-day-where-the-hell-was-I play space I currently have. I really recommend it. The AI is well-balanced, lets you take your time, but doesn't let you fart around too much. I suggest you start with it, and add a few options that you think you can handle.

If either of you have won, or come close to winning, lately, you're still doing better than I. :P

My last win was before transports got nerfed. :P

You have to add that Steam tracks everyone that ever started this game so it is likely that a major part of this are people that picked up the game but weren't interested in it

May I ask how many games you had before your victory (you can see the number of total games in the game under stats or even on the front page).

And if you pay attention to the other acheivements, you'll see that 26.4% of all players have played a game that lasted 1 hour or more. And 22.2% have taken control of a second planet...

Thanks, I feel a bit less inept!

I stopped playing during the beta for 8.00 as I prefer to use something when it's more polished, and saw no point in playing the non-beta as everything was going to change. He do I learn what is good and bad to do when either what I learn will be outdated, or constantly changing due to beta adjustments? That was my logic anyway.  A bit like playing chess and someone keeps changing how the knight moves at random intervals in the game.

I'm not an achievement - oriented player either. I like my games to be immersive. Ticking lists has its appeal but not for me most times.

Unlike you I've never tried multiplayer in this game. Must be a challenge to organize because it's so long. I find that daunting, though I am intrigued.

Majority of the changes aren't that significant.
