Which keys work on Steam?
« on: March 06, 2011, 08:56:27 am »
Hi,

sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but can I buy all the DLC for the base game at an online store (either Arcen's own, or something like direct2drive) and then use the key that gives me to activate the DLC on Steam, where I own the base game?

To clarify: I DON'T want to know whether the DLC will work on Steam, I want to know whether I can unlock the DLC on Steam using the key, so that I will "own" the DLC inside Steam itself.

Greetings,
busfahrer

All the keys, however acquired, should work on steam to get it to act like you own it in steam.

The wrinkle is that the pirate keygens sometimes create keys from the same space as the real ones, and if someone has already registered a key in steam then steam won't let you register it.  Some people have had success sending their receipt (with their steam account name or whatever written on it) to steam support and steam will dis-associate the key from the other account so the legitimate owner can register it.  But there's no guarantee on that.

But if you've already claimed your base game key on steam (or simply bought it there to begin with, which has a 100% success rate against keygen tomfoolery), you shouldn't have much trouble since the keygenning of the expansions is less common.
