Any chance for "one last patch"?
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:07:24 pm »
Any chance of doing "one last hoorah!" patch for AI War Classic?

It would be only for "low hanging fruit".

If it would involve a lot of "gutting" of code, even if the problem seems simple on the surface. Leave it.
Does it involve a major rebalancing? Leave it.
Does it involve adding new features? Forget it.

Just the most obvious bugs and glaring balance issues if they prove to be simple to fix.

Some ideas (I will update as I think of more or if people post some ideas)

Potential candidates (again, all worth tossing if it turns out to be involved after all):
Assault transport bug (unloading does not reset DPS until game load)
Simple UI bugs

Probably not worth it:
AI reinforcement logic very rarely reinforces wormhole guard posts (the formulas are complicated, and probably too risky to make any changes unless someone can point out a really easy tweak that doesn't touch anything but wormhole guard posts)

God, if we could do one just ONE more patch with meat to it there's one or two lore & gameplay things I'd love to throw in to set the stage for 2. Still, ping Chris+Keith and pitch it as a stretch goal. It'd be... nice.

This will be completely up to Keith.  If the KS succeeds, then I think that tying up some last bugs could certainly be a thing.

On the "win screen", a button that closes the game and starts AI war II.

Actually, even a small update would be a good advertisement for your kickstarter.

I asked a while back about volunteer contributions to AIW1, but never heard back.  This kind of polish and bugfix work is one of my specialties as a dev, and I'd still be happy to contribute.

Problem there is that the code is such a mess with so many places where you Can't Just Do That.
So Keith isn't comfortable with other people working on it.

Apparently 3 years ago the code was bad enough that Keith's best description of it was:

Quote from: Keith
A lot like a lumber mill built by two guys with nearly 0% concern for safety. 5-foot-radius sawblades spinning at maximum speed hanging from minimum-strength supports in the middle of an empty room with no safety shields and raw wood being thrown at them by various devices. You could call it 'efficient', you could call it 'horrifying'."

So ya, I don't think that's something I'd want to be messing around with.

D.

The only time I've "Won" this game I died to the massive counterattack after taking out both AI's bases.
