I thought it was C&C. That game died for me when I realized that I could win anytime by building towers all the way from my home base to the enemy base. Or perhaps this should be called tower offense ;). Same tactic did wonders in AoE, btw.

You know you are not allowed to call a game "Tower Defence" any more - I read somewhere that some big corporation somehow got the sole rights to use those two words >:(.

I don't remember. So I googled "Tower Defence", and found some information on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_defense

The company is COM2US. Probably they only bought the trademark for use on mobile phones?

Btw, wikipedia claims that the first td game was Rampart. Never heard of it.

Rampart was a real classic, I don't consider it tower defense though.  I played that for aaages on the NES with friends.  There is a building phase, and attack phase, it's not very similar to modern tower defense.

Yea, rampart was great, but it was more a tank/scorched-earth type game, though it probably predates those.
