Which expansion to start with?
« on: October 31, 2016, 12:10:41 am »
With all buzz about the AI War 2 Kickstarter I also just picked up AI War Fleet Command on the super sale with all the expansions. Now to begin playing. When starting to play should you try just vanilla and enable expansions as you go or is it just as easy to dive in with all enabled?

Vanilla!

It's a bit of a clustered mess with all the expansions on at full blast. If you're trying to learn, go vanilla all day, erry day. As you get a hang of the game, read up on the main feature of each expansion and add them as you wish. There is no real progression or linear path to follow. Just add whatever adds whatever nifty mechanic you feel like trying.

Yoiu can enable the zenith remnant one.

It's actually a good expansion which adds a lot. Children of Neinzul and Spires I didn't like.

The others I either didn't play or don't remember anything about.

I would go with all expansions enabled. Because otherwise (if you start with vanilla and enable expansions one by one) the rules (best tactics, etc) will change with every expansion and you would need to re-learn again.

If you're going to pick one expansion (and regardless, turn off all the plots related to the expansion, eg. if you enable Light of the Spire, ignore/disable the Fallen Spire path to victory) then I'd suggest Zenith Remnant.

It's largely a "have more stuff" expansion, with most of that "stuff" being the broken golems that are scattered around the galaxy.

I played with the first two expansions only for a long time. After you get the hang of how the AI works, go for a spire victory, and work your way from there.

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

I jumped into the deep end and started with all expansions installed right after Ancient Shadows came out. After I bounced off, I jumped in two or three years later with a vanilla game.

I recommend Zenith Remnant myself. Chris commented somewhere he feels it completes the game, and I tend to agree. Later expansions add some (really awesome) stuff though.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm thinking after I beat the tutorial I might play with the first expansion for a while and see how I go. Cheers.
