What's with the random deep strikes
« on: July 03, 2012, 11:25:34 am »
So the AIs attacked me and suddenly I got a deep strike warning even though I wasn't deep striking. I paused and looked at the map and one of my reclaimed Autocannons (I only got them by using the Leech Starship MarkIs) had "magically teleported" (or just spawned) on other side of the map about ~10-19 hops away. This happened about ~5 times and only happened on the Attritioner AIs planets. I took a screenshot of the map. As you can see there's "1" next to the "Paused" text. That's one of the Autocannons.

Does this have something to do with the difficulty, AI type, destroying carriers and/or reclaiming? Or is it a bug?

The autocannon being there and being yours is certainly some kind of bug.  If it were closer it could be the AI tractoring the unit there, but I don't think the thing would have survived being towed that far.

Do you have the save file, and are you able to get this to happen reliably?  If not cause-on-demand, how long do you have to leave it running before this happens?  Or do you have to be moving stuff around, etc?

Sounds like the classic "I reclaimed a unit on a planet with an astro regenerator train" bug. The teleport elsewhere and respawn happens before the ship ownership is transfered to the reclaiming player. (This also impacts regenerations by regenerator golems, but as they teleport the ship to their own position, it's not as annoying)

A similar thing happens to regeneration and units with tractor beams (if units X is tractoring unit Y, X dies but gets regenerated, it brings Y along to where it gets regenerated) and eating units (same as previous, but replace tractoring with swallowed)

http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=3387 (which is about zombie reclamation, but I posted in the comments that this also effects normal reclamation)
http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=6639 (for the tractor and eating form of this bug)

EDIT: IMO, I would consider this a major bug if it wasn't for the fact the astro trains can be turned off, and regenerator golems in the hands of the AI are moderatley rare. In fact, this bug is the only reason I am keeping astro trains off.

I still have this autosave ~1 minute before the screenshot. The deep strike thing happened during the fight (The AI Is attacking on 1 of my planets). I tried few times with different saves but I couldn't repeat the bug. It seems like it only happens during a battle and only if I use reclaiming ships. Not sure. I've encountered this bug before but it seems to be quite rare.

Do you have Astro Trains on?  And is there a Regen Astro Train in the system by chance?

I do have Astro Trains on (I always do). I only looked which ships I had in that system so I don't know :/

If this bug has something to do with the regeneration astro trains then it would be easy/easier to repeat with 2 train master ais and by starting with the leech bonus ship.

As a temporary workaround, can you cancel the deep strike by scrapping the ship?

As long as it's not stuck in a Maw or something like that, yeah, you can.  I do it semi-often when I run into a flippant Tractor Guardian at the edge of range.
... and then we'll have cake.

We meet again random deep strike.
I thought this was fixed ???

Snipers are my bonus ships. That Space Plane was reclaimed by Leech Starships.

It was fixed in that the savegame I had been given at the time could reproduce the problem before the fix, and could no longer do so after the fix :)

Is the save attached to your post before the space plane showed up on that planet?  Or before another similar jump?  In order to fix the mysterious jumps I have to see it actually happen; once the ship is there the data on how it got there is gone.

Thanks for the report, in any event, definitely want this one gone :)

You seem to have the worst luck with "strange bug makes AI murder me" situations...

That save is after the bug happened because I have no way of knowing when the bug is going to happen. Well it probably has something to do with reclaiming.. dunno. I'd have to save before every fight. Actually that might not help either because.. if a fight is about to start, I save, the bug happens, I reload the save before the fight and the bug probably wont happen again.

Would it help if I enabled "Advanced Logging" and posted that log after this bug happens again?

Maybe.  The save I had before never reproduced it exactly the same way due to the randomness of things, but it would pretty reliably produce an instance of it within a few minutes.

Not in this case, sorry.
