What kind of horrible monster bunches guard posts together?
« on: August 29, 2014, 12:19:04 am »
This planet has at least 5 guard posts all bunched around a gravity Command Station plus an ion cannon plus a ton of ships all covered by a forcefield. This is probably the worst Mark III planet that I've tried to take. Though at least it doesn't have an Eye or a Fortress on top of all of this.

I came up against one of those :)

it's what taught me about the tactical utility of warheads.

I ran into one of those once... it had a transloc CS, two Sniper guard posts and a raid eye, all under the same MkIII FF with no way to get supply on that planet for a beachhead.

That... took a while.

Why did you want the planet so bad? Did it have something valuable or was it in a perfect place for a whipping boy? Because I would have just ignored it.

Also you could have detonated a Mark I EMP Warhead on the planet. Then you could have rushed the Guard Posts and/or the Command Station with your fleet. Of corse that costs AIP but that's one thing you can do if you really want a planet.

Btw can Lightning Warheads still be used to destroy Force Fields, Guard Posts and Command Stations?

The original Rude Gesture may have been the most aptly named concept you've ever put in the game.

No, no, the Rude Gesture is for the subcommander that uses all counter-wave posts.

This subcommander that clusters everything around the command station is called the Horrible Monster.

When both happen together, you get a Rude Monster.

Or a Monstrous Rude Gesture.

How about just a Monstrous Gesture?  It sounds more deliciously horrible.

Unless I am mistake you can use plasma siege starship to AOE damage guard posts under shield plus anything else that isn't immune to AOE.

That was my initial strategy, but they kept getting wiped out. I ended up killing the Ion Cannon with Human Raid Starships and then set up a beachhead with a full cap of Mark I Sniper Turrets and some other turrets to protect them.

This.

The first time I saw the horrible monster I was indeed thinking "Transports + EMP Warhead".

Just pop the command station and replace with your own.  Ion cannons annoyingly enough instakill turrets, but once you plop your own command station down the ion cannons will flip.  Be prepared to immediately fortify said command station - turrets, forcefields, the usual.  Sniper turrets in particular can chip away at the forcefields and guard posts while you go off and do something else.

I took a look again at the picture. No wonder your plasma siege would not last very long. I checked in the wiki that missile frigate has the same range as plasma siege. Didn't know that before about missile frigate vs plasma siege range.

I have a couple idea on how to break that and they are nearly all unconventional and take awhile that doesn't involve breaching. (Spire craft attrition, neinzul carrier with radar dampening and ion cannon don't shoot at neinzul craft anymore, neinzul railpod to name a few)
