It counts all non-minor-faction enemy units with guns, which would include stationary ones, but does not include scout ships, etc.

Oh cool.

So in theory, I could construct a small-scale eye-harvestor.

That is, a set of turrets/parasite starships designed to capture units as they spawn.

That sounds awesome. brb.

We'd just have to make the Eye start spawning Dyson Gatlings.

First attempt failed due to unexpected eye behavior. Who knew that placing ~50 turrets would make the eye spawn units?

Second attempt was preempted by a hybrid attack on my homeworld. Apparently, hybrids werent so thrilled with my ideas either.

edit
mostly success! the breeder is going well:

thats about my total force, the 320 units there. All captured. all mk4..

Of course, for each two units i capture, the AI spawns one more... I hope this battle never ends  ;D

battle ended due to resource and energy limitations. I only had two planets at time of attempt >>

I was trying this tonite and well dunno if its a bug but the ai eye will still operate even if everything else in the system is dead. Plus any units that spawn in that situation all go right for the player planets and totally ignore any ships in system past firing at them if in range. So I was thinking along the same lines as lance and put up a parasite camp along with the rest of the fleet on the opposite side of the wormhole with lots of tractor turrets and sent in a ff bearer and fighter blob to kite out far away and spawn units to capture.

Welp, that didn't go well at all.

Seems the ai eye doesn't take ships that have left the system into its reinforcement formula and very quickly I had around 4000+ angry ai ships that wiped out my camp and quickly ended the game. ;p

Nice one.   ;D

However if you instead put the camp on the ai eye side with a rally post and some mrs on the wormhole then its works just dandy.  8)

And how come only mk II ships spawn out of the ai eye? Even on a mk IV world it only spawned mk II ships..  :'(

Ah I see. In that case I'm nearly to mk II waves so I get to max cap another mk level of free ai ships for my home defence fleet. \o/

Lurve this ai eye.  ;D

Yeah I agree. I'm sure it will get a proper balance when enough feedback comes in but atm I am enjoying my free home defence fleet spawner.  ;)

Since we're talking about the Eye...

I think there's too many of them. I mean, I feel like every dang planet has one. Or at least majority. This creates a redundant routine of having to rid an Eye every time you attack an AI planet. Considering that there are so many different kinds of guard posts and guardians now, it feels awfully boring to have the same kind of obstacle as an Eye on every planet. It also loses its effectiveness when you expect an Eye on every assault. If only, say, one out of five planets at maximum would have one at a time, you could more easily neglect to notice it and make a mistake of attacking by a large force head-on.

I do like the idea behind the Eye though. It puts some breaks on steamrolling, but it seriously should be only an occasional obstacle.

Maybe instead of quantity, they could have quality, like an even harsher counter-ratio. Say, making sure the player only outnumbers the AI by 3:2 or 4:3, heck, even 1:1. In turn they would be much more rare, and would require even stricter guerrilla tactics.

That's my opinion anyhow. :]

What are your AI types - I think the Eyes were meant to be more frequent on defensive AI types.

And I agree that when they are on to many planets they simply get boring since you know taht you need to either land on it and destroy it first or raid it first then attack.

My current game has almost too few Eyes.

Almost.
