What is the eye mechanic?
« on: October 23, 2010, 12:17:20 am »
I've only checked this forum a few times per week, and thus have missed the majority of the updates and their details.  (With what other game developer can that be said?)

But I did see mention of the eye mechanic which discourages giant blobs, and I'm wondering what that is exactly?

I haven't had time to play for awhile, but I'm really looking forward to spending more time with the game soon, and hope to contribute through bug reports and such once again.

Thanks.

AI Eyes are a  direct feed back to the AI core network: when player ships gang up on the AI overwhelmingly, alarms are tripped and higher-level AI ships come pouring out of the Eye.  Either kill the eye first, before bringing in your gigantic fleet, or just do guerrilla-style raids on planets with an Eye.  Specifically, the AI Eyes make sure that your ships only ever outnumber the AI ships 2:1.

Does that answer it, or something more specific?

That answers my question, and I like the mechanic.

Thanks!  Me too, I just ran into it tonight for the first time ever in real gameplay rather than testing.  Definitely something different and a positive addition, I'm glad to see in full practice.

I had a REALLY tough time with an eye last night in a game with King. The Eye was far away, and under a Mk III forcefield, on a planet with 3 Ion cannons and a Fortress. It wasn't enough to simple snipe it with sieges (they died before they even fell the forcefield) and Raids weren't doing enough damage before they died. I couldn't simply blob the system either.

It was really a challenge how to take that system :P

I think the AI eye is a good addition to an already great game :D

A couple of days back I was playing a game with roaming enclaves enabled, I had taken two or three systems, one of which created a buffer between a mark III system with an AI eye and my home world. I had fortified the buffer system and was drawing the attention of guardians in the eye system, thinning it out so I could take the ARL in that system. I went rather well and I decreased the number of guardians in the eye system by about 21 to 11. But all of a sudden my defenses in the buffer system got overrun and obliterated by ~900 mark III ships. I switched to the eye system and it looked like these ships were streaming out of the eye attacking about 400 enclave ships and then proceeding to the worm hole of my buffer system. After they had neutered my buffer system they proceeded to my home command station, which then went boom

Now, do you think this was caused by the roaming enclaves aggravating the eye, or some other mechanic?

I think you've found a bug, or a logic error on my part, anyway.  I agree that the minor factions are probably affecting the eye, but they definitely should not be.  I'll put in code to fix that today!

I reported on tracker bug that enclave would aggravate raid engine. I guess that it also will aggravate eye - it generates 100's of younglings.

Yeah, there are probably other similar ships (clusters, etc) that do the same.  I should be able to get them all in one swoop.  Thanks!

Are AI eyes supposed to function as a warp gate for waves?

does the eye count stationary units.. or.. riot guns, for instance?
