Finally Getting The Hang Of It...
« on: November 24, 2012, 06:47:23 pm »
I think I bought AI Wars in like 2010 or so and I played it a bit, but always found myself getting obliterated and sadly stopped afterwards.

However, I have finally came back to it after 2 years and i'm finding it quite interesting. Even though I have 2/4 expansions, I have a lot of the expansion things off and my settings are probably basic (No AI Progress after a certain amount of time because I like to spend a lot of time planning, No astro train, no golems, Level 7 AI, 40 Planets). While I only have 4 planets under my control (my home and the 3 adjacent planets) and scouted the others around them in my 2 hours, I feel like I might have a lot of fun in the coming battles and stand a cgood chance of beating the AI. ;D

So overall, I made a thread to inform people that I am now happy with the game and realised that my main drawback with the game was the fact that I didn't think the game could accomodate my slow, drawn-out nature and would just push me until I was in a corner. But i'm glad that I have found a pacing that suits me as some RTS/Strategy games do not offer that. :) Plus, I usually read all these epic RTS stories about how people play and think that I could never be as good as them, but now I don't care about being good as long as I have fun while playing my Normal Difficulty game. :D

So thank you, Arcen Games for being awesome and I will be sure to make everyone proud and win my ongoing battle with the Yellow and Pink Menace!

It is quite cool to come back after such a long time and see all the new goodies available isn't it?
I've also made a few pit-stops myself. In 2009 at release, march 2011, and now again. I'm amazed they're still supporting/developing it. Wish more indie developers had that kind of devotion.

By the way, there is a sale on Steam going on this week if you wanna get the other 2 expansions as well. They're well worth it and it's dirt cheap.

As far as the planning/pacing go, I agree, you can totally play it however and in whatever pace you like. Though I have to say, part of the game's strength is being dealt a messy situation and having to make the best of it. Sometimes turning on those settings that are out of your comfort zone can actually make the game more enjoyable.

Yeah, but I will see how this battle goes, then move up to other things slightly. And I know of the sale, so going to try to judge if I want the expansions before the sale ends. :P

Like usually I didn't know the first thing about base defense and things, but now I have learnt that. The key thing is taking the time to understand what everything does and how it affects the other components really. And since I got my ass kicked alot, by turning down the planet size and the removal of the astro trains and golems has given me more time to focus on the other parts.

Like before I stopped, I noticed that there were Ion Cannons on a planet near me in the corner of my galazy, so see it as a perfect time to learn about Zenith starships and other starships rather than waste all my ships throwing cannon fodder at it. :P

You gotta crawl before you can walk and all that. ;D

That's a compilation of my answers to newbies' questions.

Because I only started using the forums for A Valley Without Wind really, so never been to the AI War forum part, but it is nice to see it is helpful and somehwat busy. :D

I read those and they are insightful and may benefit my next battle. The good thing is that I don't have any AI Plots and very few AI Options on in my battle at the moment, so it is quite plain in that sense. The AI was set to Random Easier and at a level of 7.

If I get anymore stuck or baffled though, i'll come to the forums to ask more. ^_^
