Wave warning lied to us.
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:34:33 am »
Team mate triggered a AI counter attack, wave warning came up as 1001 Acid sprayers.

We left enough to counter, and continued our game.

Timer runs out, here come the acid spra.... Oh no wait, It's 1000 mark 3 fighters/bombers/missles and they proceed to smash their way through 6 sectors, ending the game :(.

What was frustrating is that we could have stopped it if the wave warning hadn't lied to us :(.

Should we have expected this? What should we do in future?

Sounds like a bug to me, can you post the save (in this case, preferably after the wave announcement appeared but before the wave itself) to our mantis bugtracker so we can take a look?

Thanks :)

I had the same problem on a counter attack, it listed Z Shredders but hit with Z Chameleons. At least they both had close combat hull... ^_^

No save tho, :(

Hmm, in the context of the game story, what are wave warnings anyways? Who is giving you all this knowledge, especially early on when you have no scouts anywhere?

I think the AI gives you wave warnings to lull you into a false sense of security. This is more proof than ever, we now know they are capable of subterfuge :D

Hmm, I think I may have seen this happen to me too, with warp counterattack posts' warps. I think I got an announcement about specific shiptype, yet the wave has also triangle ships. Can't verify this, but I get the feeling I've experienced something similar.

Humans have warp sensors to detect incoming waves as standard equipment. That's why there's an 'Advanced Warp Sensor', which is, obviously, an advanced version that can tell more exactly where the waves come in. The standard detectors are only capable of telling what planet the wave goes to, not which wormhole.

What about CPAs and ??? waves then. :) I could use whatever bottomless scanning ability my command centres seem to have, but I don't.

Regrettably the only save we have is just after the wave smashes everything :(.
We'll keep all the autosaves next game and no doubt it will happen again ;).

TO THE RESCUE!

I've been doing an in progress after action report, and the same thing happened to me! Here you go, complete with saved game.

...I've been saving every 10 minutes, so I could probably dig out the point where I blew up the two counter-attack guard posts.

I've been noticing this as well.

>What about CPAs
You're not supposed to learn of the ship composition through the UI notification; you'll find out soon enough.  CPAs don't cause any sort of indication as to where it's coming from (no warp detection), other than where you see AI ships going on their planets, if you have the scout intel.

>??? waves
These are sent as ??? because you aren't in possession of an adjacent planet next to an AI planet, and thus the wave is sent as a small CPA from an AI planet that travels into your territory.

Think I also have seen it, but I had an overwhelming force there and smashed em all into oblivion regardless :P

I never really thought much about it before now that it probably is a bug.

I'm pretty sure all waves I've seen from counter attack guard posts have been a mix of ships no matter what it said. Never really thought about it after the first time though.

CPAs have always troubled me. quite frequently, I start preparing for one, and when the timer is up omgomgOMG!... nothing.

From what I recall, if you hover over the current threat, you get a breakdown of where the ships are. Of course, you still have to deal with the ships, but at least that should give you an idea of where to expect them from. Of course, if you've dropped a few scouts on adjacent worlds you've probably got some idea of where most of the AI will be freed up at.
