Wave attacking my home planet from out of nowhere?
« on: January 05, 2011, 07:57:30 pm »
Hi Everybody,

I was playing my first game against a level 7 AI (random easy and random easy) yesterday, and had something unexpected happen.  I had a (roughly) 150 ship wave attack my home planet, which I had plenty of warning about, but the wave spawned from out of nowhere.  (There wasn't a wormhole or anything near where the enemy appeared.)  I had a mobile defense force, so they didn't do too much damage, but I'm curious about why that happened.

Does anybody have any thoughts?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forums :)

It sounds like either a counterattack guard post or a Warp Jumper AI.

Oh, and since you didn't have any hard-type AIs, scratch the warp jumper possibility :)

Ahh, perfect.  Warp counterattack guardpost makes perfect sense.  I hadn't seen those in the wiki before.

Thanks!

These things just keep catching people off guard, aren't they? xD

Basicly there are 2 ways attacks will land on your planets, through the gates, or being spawned in the south-eastern corner of the planet.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Under the current betas doesn't the wave explicitly state that it's from a counterattack post? Perhaps the OP isn't playing with the betas, though.

Very good point. I dont even know the 'official' game.

I just got started playing.  I'm still using the "official" version, haven't quite graduated to the betas yet.

Oh in case anybody was curious, it was a warp counterattack guardpost.  After playing this particular scenario some more, I've come to the sad conclusion that I'm engaged in a war with 2 turtle AI's.  Yuck!

That would definitely explain it. In the newer betas there are some precautions to make it somewhat clearer when you're being attacked as a result of a counterattack post. You can't destroy the command station before the post (so you can't set it off that way, as you could before) and the wave message explicitly states that the origin of the wave is a counterattack post. Before those were in there were a lot of reports like yours, since these things had a way of sneaking up on you. :)
