Warping in at random locations. And a sniper glitch.
« on: November 23, 2010, 12:40:34 pm »
Hello everyone! I am new to the forum, and I don't ever join a forum unless I absolutely love the game :D. Aside from that, I am playing on campaign right now, the AI is harder, but 7.0. I am having a problem, where I have destroyed the warp gates in the enemy wormholes directly next to me, yet I am recieving two waves fairly early in the game...one of which is 90 to my system, the other 90 are going to "???". They are also being warped in at a random location in my system, is this a raid engine of some sort? I am positive I did not attack a warp counter attack post. And one other thing, when enemy snipers are in my system, they run sooo far off the map, to the point where my defending army chases them, and both armies are at a near standstill in the corner of my map, but the snipers can shoot my army, while my army cannot, this seems like a bug with the sniper AI. The way I destroyed them was I had to build some sniper turrets because nothing else could get to them in the corner of my solar system.

Hey Erathsmus,

Welcome to the forums!  It sounds like there might be a raid engine or something there, but it's really hard to know without any sort of details or a save, etc.  I'd check the surrounding systems and see what you see.

Regarding the snipers, those are working as expected -- they only flee whatever they are targeting, so if they're targeting some fighters or similar, just taking a smaller contingent of frigates or other longer-range ships would let you kill them.  But the main counters to enemy snipers in a situation like that would be other snipers or else sniper turrets.

Another trick?  You can use a scout starship to provide mobile sniper cover for a small number of your ships.  Then the snipers won't be able to target them, and you can "sneak up" on them while they are busily shooting something else.

Thank you for the warm welcome ;D As for the waves, do they normally warp into a system that is labeled as ????, this was about 10 minutes into the game as well. There were 2 systems next to me, and I destroyed both warp gates, so either the warp was initiated before I destryod it maybe, or a raid engine sent in 2 waves in which both were warped in from not a wormhole.

The snipers though,I guess I will just have to build sniper turrets, as my units were set on auto defend, and just ended up chasing the snipers to the far corner of my system, and got stuck.

Thank you very much once again! As for the wave problem I am having, I still do not know what to do.

Sure thing!  And: ah, mystery solved on the waves: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_No_Warning_On_Waves%3F

Yes, for defense with FRD ships, just having a sniper turret or two will solve your problem quite quickly and painlessly.  Not a bad thing to have in general, really (for things with cloaking, etc).  My other notes were more in regard to when you are on offense, and thus not in FRD mode and not having turrets available.

Hmm, this kind of lost me  "On difficulty 6 and up, they'll warp their waves into one of their planets (since yours are all inaccessible), and then send the ships they warp in through the wormhole chain to your planets. Since they aren't warping when they get near your planet, you get no warning."

It tells me waves are coming, but how do they get there? They aren't coming in through the conventional wormhole, are they manually traveling into my system or something?! I am just confused on how they still make Waves, while they have no warp gate, and the most confusing thing for me, is that it appears as they came into my system through a manner other than the wormhole...I am sorry for the questions by the way, I am just confused  :'(

I'm not sure how they're getting on your system, but if it says ?? then it should be on a different system other than yours.  From the sound of things there may be a bug in the recent betas, but it's very hard to tell from what you're saying.  But, killing all the warp gates from all planets next to yours is a bad idea: always leave one alive if you can.

Hmm, to make it more easier to see.

This is what it says on the wave alert.

90 Zenith Mirrors to Ijini 2:33
90 Bombers to ?.?.?.  2:33

When the countdown is finished, they are in my system, and they did not get in through a wormhole. I do not have the AI using any bonus things such as schitzofrenic, and x2 wave etc. I was about 10 minutes into the game. I destroyed the warpgates bordering me, there were no counter warps located in either system. The AI difficulty was on 7, harder AI.

That sounds like some form of bug; if you are able to reproduce, a post in mantis would be most helpful!  But I've not seen that yet, so not much I can do about it so far.  Thanks for the added details!
