I never considered playing that way, but I like the cut of your jib.

I'll have to check it out some time.

It's funny: playing without an AIP increase over time would go a ways to ruining the immersion for me, personally. And certainly being in a position to walk off and come back hours later would.

Hell, if I'm not somewhat afraid of the AI all the time, I figure my settings are too easy!

Heh. One of my more negative problems with AIP over time is that - it was that way every time I played with it on - I play paused for almost the entire game, and almost kill my nerves trying to save every second, every unit of crystal, and ever single unit. Because hey, how much would I regret needing but not having them later on?

With infinite time, I just crank all other difficulty settings up to the maximum and take my time. The AI is still just as nasty, if not even worse...but without me having to plan out every metre of movement just so I don't waste any time. And since all resources can regenerate - or at least won't be used up without me doing something - it means that I can play without micro-managing to save time, which I hate, and instead focus on the things that are fun to me. AI 9.0 and plenty of minor factions take care of the difficulty.

+1 :)
Exactly what I do, dont care about AIP over time, just scale up everything else. I rather play with spirecraft on hard and Neinzul enclaves, pinning me down on my own planets, where I simply need time to be on my hand, than I prefer the AIP over time penalty.

Then you need to enable more npc options for your game. Thats the beauty of ai war tbh. There is a difficultly level for litrerally everyone regardless of playstyle.

edit; and only 10 downloads for my 10 planet zomghowcaniwin save? C'mon people there has to be more legit ai war players than just me who like a challange.

So here is a nice little sweetener for the pot. Whoever posts the first winning save game for my posted game gets 100 million isk in eve if you provide me with your eve name and a valid savegame file.

Oooh, I'd never do it again. AIW is one of the holy trinity of games (the others being homeworld and freespace) which I forgive having speed limits in space. eve does not have that forgiveness. It's failing is unforgivable. Unforgiven, too.

And the only remotely exciting thing was flipping cans on people, but even that consisted of 90% waiting, 5% getting no reaction, and 4% the other guy being a smartass.

I'll never play Eve again, I've got my life back, but flying with a well tuned PvP squad was a really gratifying experience. One of the best rushes I've had in online gaming. If you didn't smash things up and drink from the Well of Tears (other players and your own), you missed ostensibly the greatest thing about Eve. I still miss that aspect and have fond memories of the people I flew with. The other 99% of the game (grinding ISK and being a virtual slave to your Corps stations) still gives me the shakes when I think about it.

fake edit: Hey Khan, you ever check out the Independence War space sims? GoG has both games, tuned up for modern systems. Full Newtonian flight model <3. No speed limits! You also command a starship as opposed to a light fighter. You have mass and momentum to contend with and some really interesting simulated ship systems.

Heard of it, but that was that. Is it really playable on a modern machine with 16:10 screen? No bonky proportions, super-pixels or abysmal framerates?

Also, since my thread on that was apparently deleted...WTH is going on in this savegame of mine? There's a fighter on the wrong end of the galaxy!

I-War 2 is widescreen friendly if you don't mind text editing some ini files. The first game is problematic since a glide wrapper is necessary for the game to run properly. It's actually pretty amazing that they have the first game working as well as it is.

GoG's forums are very helpful for this sort of thing, and can be really great for old gaming support even if you don't own the GoG version of the game in question.

Here's the process. If that looks like something you don't mind fiddling around with, then I highly recommend Independence War 2.

I've also heard great things about Evochron Mercenaries, which also uses a Newtonian physics model, as well as a ton of other great sounding features. I don't have any personal experience with it (too many games! ARGH! ). It's high up on my list of things to check out though.

Lol I know. I never by new games. I still have Warfcraft III: Frozen Throne right next to it's map editor on my desktop. Gotta hand it to Blizz's RTS mapmakers, there are a hell of alot of em and they work hard! xD
