Version 3.1.2.0 changes resource amounts
« on: May 18, 2010, 01:25:51 am »
Pretty much all of the planets on my save game now have 2-4 more of each resource, including home planets. I mean, I suppose this won't make the game harder or anything, but what's the deal? Just checking to see if this is intended and if it's happened to anyone else.

Edit: Oh, and the last version I had was 3.0.6.0.

To my knowledge, handicaps can't be added after the game's been created...or can they? In any case, it's affecting all planets, not just player-controlled ones.

Lesson learned, I guess. Too bad I can't go back to the old version very easily.

-On multiplayer games with three players and up, there are now slightly more resources seeded into game maps (including existing savegames, and increasing as the number of players increases) to make the experience more consistent with that of the 1-2 playr games.

Got it!

WildM, Glad you saw that note, I was going to point you at it but no need :)

And on the whole "don't update unless you hit a bug" concept; please play however you want to play, but with regard to this please remember:
1) We (Arcen and the players) really benefit from as many people as possible playing the prereleases and providing feedback both in terms of bug reports and suggestions.
2) You can maintain multiple installs of AI War, and back up your saves before loading them in a prerelease version.
3) If there is any _serious_ problem from a prerelease version, as in a crash or desync (both of which are very rare, particularly the latter), we fix them very quickly.  I've seen Chris turnaround a fixed version in significantly less than an hour after a crash report; not that we can guarantee that level of service but it's something to keep in mind.
4) Even aside from the showstoppers, bug reports about features/changes just deployed in a recent prerelease typically get addressed pretty fast.
4) There's cool stuff in the prereleases ;)

You make me feel guilty for playing the official version most of the time.  I usually only update once you reach the release candidate [bug fix only] stage, and I'll report (and have reported) any bugs I find.

Well, the most important bit in what I said is "please play however you want to play".  Remember, you paid us, not the other way around ;)

Also, it is very helpful to have some of the regulars playing the latest official version, so if we missed any big bugs in it we'll know rather than relying on folks who aren't normally part of the active community jumping in to let us know (which they often do).  For instance, the desync problem in 3.120; a couple of our regular prerelease-players found it but when some others reported that it was also happening in the official that let us know that we needed to shorten this official cycle to get a new official out with that fixed (I think Chris wants to do that in a week or so, fyi, which means you'll get access to some of the fairly cool new UI features at that point).

feedback is good, but sometimes having a random change like that will shock you.

I now have 2 AI wars installed One at Steam release level for serious games and a copy that I tend to keep updated to Beta for goofing around on. I think Keith said he keeps 5 copies on his machine with; Steam, Impulse and several beta/development versions.

Thanks to the staff for pointing out how easy it is to keep multiple versions on one machine.

Chris is the one with the 5 versions ;)  I don't think he mentioned his alpha versions either.

Yeah, that's true about the alpha versions.  And if you count the for-installer versions, and for-localization versions that are sitting in various folders on my drive, I easily have 20 copies on the computer.  Only 5ish of those are ever run, though, the rest are just for packaging. ;)

WildM; just realized you were the guy running the SA AI War LP.  In your case I would suggest making sure you've looked at the release notes first before updating to a prerelease; we fix stuff fast but with the experimental arithmetic overflow changes going on right now you might want to be more careful since it could affect your ability to keep the play going to keep the updates going there, etc.
