Vampires?
« on: June 06, 2009, 03:19:41 am »
Hey there, I just purchased the game today, and when I started my first full game I chose Vampire ships as my starting tech, since they sounded neat.  However, when I built some and took them into battle, they were doing 0 damage to bombers, which they're listed as being strong against.  I tested them on some other units, and the same thing occurred.  However, the life leech effect worked fine, so they were in an infinite loop of getting hit by sniper turrets/bombers and healing off the same bomber.  Are they working as intended and I'm missing something, or are they bugged?

Also, thank you for making this game, the demo was a perfect way to get me hooked on it.  I've been looking for a good co-op rts, and I am sure I can sell at least one of my friends on the concept :)

Cough, some units aren't that useful.

My favorites are the cruiser, upgrade those when you can imho. After that, the bomber is a good unit to crack shields with, but they can ONLY be used against shields with no defense against them, or you just loose em all. If you can't take the shield down with bombers, high level cruisers are your only hope, that or some of the specialist units, that I rarly see, I think one shoots thru shields.

Hmm, that does sound like a bug with vampires -- I'll look into that today.  Thanks for letting me know about that!

Haha, wonderful!  I'm so glad to hear from other players who have been on the lookout for co-op RTS games.  That was the core reason I built the game (I wanted a co-op RTS for myself), so it's really rewarding to hear from others who were looking for something similar.

All units are useful in some capacity, but some have various limitations.  Infiltrators are useful only in giant swarms, for instance.  Vampires are only supposed to be very useful when in larger groups, too, even though you can build comparably few of them (so a "large group" of vampires might be 10-20, versus 300 or so with infiltrators).  Spiders are also harder to use, but work great in combo with things like cruisers (for that matter, infiltrators also work great with cruisers).  And some of the others, like EyeBots and MicroFighers, are weaker in battle (kind of average really, nothing special), but have a bunch of extra abilities that make them great extra scouts or minesweepers, respectively.

And the list goes on, with some of the more complex ships -- Munitions Boosters take more micromanagement than other ships (got to keep them in groups with other ships), but they can be absolutely lethal if used right.  There's a use for everything (except it sounds like this bug is preventing vampires from being useful), but some are still indeed weaker than others, overall.  That makes for more or less challenging games depending on which one you select at the start, same as how various civs in most other RTS games (thinking here of AoEIII mostly) are mostly balanced, but still some are weaker than others.

Okay, yep, turns out that both cutlasses and vampires deal no damage in the current version.  It's been like this since late in the beta, apparently, so I'm surprised that no one caught it until now.  It will be fixed in tonight's prerelease version.

Awesome, I'm glad I was able to spot that :)

If I purchased it off of Impulse, will the prerelease versions work for me, or should I wait until Impulse is updated?

Spelk tried it out with the Impulse version, and it worked great for him.  Thanks again!
