Update in-game 404's for expansion
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:20:11 pm »
From the main menu in game, I see the update, but after clicking on Get Update, I get

An error occurred while trying to download the file.
The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found.

At least progress is being made!

Such a cruel thing to do to us pre-paying customers, making us think the update will work and instead serving up a 404! The sick pleasure you must get!

 I kid, i kid...

Got 3.0  :D  I think the music is in 3.0.0.1 for the expansion, which is the one that is giving the 404.

Yeah, that was strange! The version 3.0.0.1 was 26 megs large (as opposed to the usual 4 megs), so I assumed the music had downloaded with the patch...but upon checking, I don't see it in the base music folder or the expansion folder. Not sure what happened with 3.0.0.1 as I got the same 404 error myself. I'm wondering what was in that extra 22 megs that downloaded....Hrmmms.   :)

**Edit: Aha! I found some AppLife temp files in my temp folder; a couple were 4 megs and one was 26 megs. I'm wondering if they installed properly.

If I remember correctly (read as highly unlikely).  I think it was said that 3.0 would be a full redownload of the expansion, maybe that's it.  Just thought of a question while waiting, why is there a section in the update for official releases and for the expansion?  I thought it was said that there would only be one current version, to avoid fragmenting the community.

The expansion relates to the expansion content (sounds, materials, ect). It's still a unified executable, but people who don't own the expansion don't have to download the data for it. You download the base game, then you download the content for the expansion in the updates tab. When they do buy it, they will need to download the expansion content, which is done by clicking on the name of the expansion. You can also download the content to enable the expansion in trial mode for people who want to try before they buy. The official relase versions are all unified, but do not contain the content of the expansions. The expansion data is kept in separate folders, and can be deleted when an expansion is disabled.

Sorry, I'm still working with the expansion content -- had to stop to get some dinner, but now I'm back to finish it.  quickstix is exactly right in his explanation.

Thanks for the answer.  I was just under the assumption that everyone would have the expansion data, only trial mode instead of full.  Thinking that maybe separate version numbers may cause confusion.  Is my 3.001 compatible with your 3.000, for example.

I suppose we can let you have a meal break  ;D

Thanks for all the hard work x4000, love the game.

No problem -- the expansions and the base game are intended to have the same version numbers in general, but... well, it's a long story.  At any rate, I don't see a reason to make non-expansion customers download 100 MB of content that they won't actually use; as we do more expansions, that number will only grow.  This way people download what they want, and it's very easy in general.

The expansion and the base game always share the same numbering system, so there will always only be one "current" official version and one "current" beta version at most, regardless of how many expansions there someday are.  But, in the case of the internal content for the expansion, sometimes that might have a different internal version number (if we update an image, or text, or what have you).

Blah, it sounds more confusing than it really is, mainly because I messed up one thing with the expansion updater, and that's causing me to have to go through some extra gyrations at the moment.  But it's all good, I've got it worked out and there will be expansion availability shortly.

Thanks for your support, all!  And I'm glad you're looking forward to the music. :)

Keys from this site have been available for a while.  I bought mine in November.

Yep -- right on the main site sidebar!  And now you can get the expansion content via the updater!

Woot! Done and done. Downloading the update now! I should have did this earlier, that way you get all the profit instead of Steam taking a cut.
