Update Error: 3 > 3.012
« on: January 17, 2010, 06:24:21 am »
Updater presents 3.012 as available for update.  I click the link and it downloads but then dumps me to the desktop, all processes stop.  Restart AI War and still on v3 with the 3.012 update still available to download.  Second click on download dumps me to the desktop and stops all processes.  Game still on v3 with update still available to download.

Me thinks some kind of auto-package execute process isn't kicking off.

Got it working.

Every time I tried to d/l the patch it would dump to desktop without d/ling anything at all.  I killed the 'msiexec' process and ran the game and updater again.  After clicking past an 'already downloading' error message (it wasn't d/ling anything BTW) the second updater task completed successfully.

Based on the above it appears that if the update fails for any reason it isn't able to recover properly in order to make a second attempt.

Interesting -- glad you got it figured out! I will be sure to let anyone else who encounters this know that. If it turns out to be more than a one-time fluke, I'll let the folks over at applife know.

All updates have been seamless for me and have installed perfectly with no problems, including v3.012. I'm not boasting or anything, just relaying my results.

As stated in the 312 thread still cant update.
Even without any AV it keeps on saying the .exe is in use. (impulse and steam release tested)
I'd like a manual download option of the file or any advice on how to make it to work.

The process suggested by the OP is not running here.

If you give me the exact text of the error message, I can follow up with AppLife support (http://www.kineticjump.com/forums/yaf_forum2_AppLife-Update.aspx), who make the updater we use.  I haven't heard of this sort of issue before, but with the exact error text I imagine that I can find out what is going on and either recommend how to fix it, or get a fix from them.

Incidentally, what OS are you running?  If Vista or Win7, you are authorizing admin access, right?  That's required to write to the Steam or Impulse folders in those OSes.  If you're running XP, the issue might be that there is no way to request admin access, and thus if the folder has unusual security the updater will fail.  If you make sure that your own user account has access to that folder, then perhaps that will solve the issue.

Alternatively, if it pops up with a message saying that file is in use, you can use task manager to forcibly kill AIWar.exe and see if that doesn't solve the issue (hopefully there is a Retry button when it detects a locked file?).

Hope one of those helps!

Thanks for the image!  I've used that info to look through the applife knowledge base, and so far am not coming up with anything that seems relevant -- but, the next step with them would be for me to contact them and show them the image to see what they think.

As one temporary workaround... can you try renaming the AIWar.exe to AIWar2.exe and then run that?  It's possible that even that will fail because some other process unrelated to the game or the installer is locking it, which would then prevent you from even renaming it.  If you are able to rename it, then running the updater from the "2" version should let you do the update without incident.

This is obviously kind of a hack, but it should give us some useful information and/or let you at least get this update.  I'll follow up with the AppLife folks after I hear how this goes, so that I can give them the most information possible.  Of course, if it's some other process that is locking the executable (and preventing updates and rename of that file), then that other process would need to be killed before you actually do the update -- possibly Steam left a handle open to it, and simply needs to be restarted.  Possibly there is a background copy of AI War running (check Task Manager) that needs to be killed.  Possibly there is something funky in the OS with it referencing it (this happens to me sometimes with files, though never AI War or any other game before), and in that case a reboot should fix it.

Of random note, it might be steam itself doing something - Since AI war is not copy protected (i think..) and it doesnt seem to rely on steam copy protection, you should be able to launch it directly from /steam/steamapps/common/ai war/ai war.exe without steam running..

Wow!
That was really fast support :)

Ok i got the error both on Steam and on Impulse on my home pc while on my work notebook the update worked flawlesly so it must be something on my system (strange.. they have very similar setup both win7 64 bit).

In any case i tried the rename thing and... it WORKS ! ^_^

Before updating both the version i did some digging to help you out adress this issue for the future, i confirm i had no Aiwar.exe running on background and that launching the update the aiwar.exe was killed as it should be.
I tried closing the AV with no results so really i'm unsure where was the problem :(

Thanks for the hacking suggestion that got the job done though ^^

Wonderful!  Glad that got the job done, at least -- I will see what AppLife support is a able to suggest about this.  Very odd indeed, but glad the workaround worked!
