You can do the beta updates from within the steam game.

Just launch AI war and access the Updates from the menu.

I'm running with the CoN expansion unlocked version 3.182 on steam this way.

Just doublecheck for multiplayer that everyone has the same version

D.

You can buy a beta key (pre-order) here from arcen's website, and when the game goes live, and steam sells the expansion, you will be able to put in your serial into steam and it will update that you bought it.  I've done it 2 times already with Tidalis, and Zenith exp.  Luckily Arcen games is in Valve's add a serial thing they do.

Yep, what they said.  The next official release won't be until 4.0 is fully ready, so most likely we'll be in beta through late September or early October, with the full deal coming out on officially on Steam and everywhere else at that time.  But you can still use it with Steam just the same as always until then, with achivements, tracking, steam overlay, and all that good stuff!

I guess what I'm worried about is that I'm going to have to save little pieces of paper every time I want to activate this expansion. I have four computers, and ai war is running on three of them. Steam helps me manage my games by handling the updates. I would like to start on the expansion now because I've heard about a lot of the new features and they sound awesome. If I update this way, will all my computers know I unlocked it? and the next time I install, will steam know that I bought all three products or do you have to paste the code every time for eternity?

Until you register it -"after the game is out, you'll have to paste the code every time -- that would be the main drawback of getting it early in your case, I think. There's no harm in waiting for the official if you like; if you want the latest betas, you can still get them and just disable CoN until it comes out.
