Unable to steal knowledge
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:27:42 am »
Hi everyone.

I bought AI war and the expansion after reading on RPS about Arcens financial troubles and I am having alot of fun with my first real campaign (after the tutorial one).
Everything is going well except for one thing, I am unable to steal knowlege from enemy planets. I seem to recall doing this in the tutorial campaign but when i try the same (sending tech labs with fleet support to cover them, through a hostile wormhole to a planet next to one of my own) the tech labs just sit there saying Exhausted even though the galaxy map screen clearly shows 0/2000 knowledge.

I even tried keeping my techlabs in the system while destroying the inhabiting AI and I not even removing the AI from the system would let me generate knowledge. In fact it wasnt until I captured it myself that I started getting some.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

The system for stealing knowledge has changed somewhat.
To knowledge raid now,  you must build a mark 3 lab in the hostile system.
The reason this has changed is it was previously WAY too easy to steal knowledge.
This way, if nothing else, costs a hefty amount of resources, and on higher difficulties, can incur some wrath from the AI

This is only changes in he betas, to my recollection (which of course anyone playing con is on at the moment). So we just haven't yet updated the tutorials and wiki, since it's not officially out... I'm pretty sure. Otherwise it was an oversight. ;)

Either way, we have tutorial updates planned for 4.0 (and the in game tooltips for the science labs are already updates). Thanks so much for your support, and glad you're enjoying the game! Sorry for the confusion.

If the planet is neutral (you destroyed the AI command station), and in supply (next to one of your command stations), then you should have been able to gather knowledge with any of the science labs. The limitation should be for hostile (AI command station on the planet) worlds, but neutral worlds are fair game because you have already taken the AI progress hit- just remember that Sci Labs require supply.

If you posted pictures, or uploaded the save, someone may be able to take a look at it.

Does the planet have supply? Without supply science labs will not work. It is easy to forget and over look things that block supply like AI co-processors.

I thought the reason for the change was not because it was too easy to steal knowledge, but because it was too grindy? In any case, I do miss the easy knowledge, but I suppose it was good to do away with the grind.
Time to roll out another ball of death.

It was both.

this may very well be it.

This game is complex enough that there are plenty of things i havent figured out yet.

Which is a beauty about AI War (hopefully)!

We hope you're enjoying the game and experience!  :)

I have been playing since last winter or whenever the zenith remnant came out, and I continue to learn new things about the game and see things I haven't seen before. That's a good thing.

Or, in a negative light, the new things I tend to learn go something like "What? Ship X has immunity to Y? Darn, a minor inconvenience! Send in extra reinforcements!"
