I'm new here and just trying out the demo, so far, so good. Is there any way to focus in on a unit and zoom in close to it without having to reposition the screen? What'd I like to see is that I can select a unit and zoom with the unit being the center focus of the zoom. Wasn't sure if there was trick for this...

Welcome to the board, cc! You bet, there's a trick for that -- just hold down the spacebar to center on a unit. Then if you zoom in while that is held, it will center on that unit. Depending on what version of the demo you have, it might jitter around a bit as you are zooming in; later versions have corrected that. You can update the demo just like you would the full version of the game (Check For Updates in the main menu), if it's important to you.
Also, something you may have missed in general is that the screen zooms in on the position of your mouse cursor. So if you want to look at any unit (say, one belonging to another player, which is therefore unselectable by you), just hover the mouse cursor over it as you zoom in, and you're good to go.
