That sucks. I guess you might not have liked it because you heard the hype or something? I didn't get any of that, I just picked up a game off the rack, and tried it out, and was introduced to a completely new type of game (RTS). I was hooked.

But you can't really think it was actually crap? Is there a particular reason? Keeping in mind this is a total hijack of the original thread and everything.

I mostly remember the cutscenes in StarCraft. They were absolutely amazing for their time.

The game didn't really strike me as very good, but I was in a small minority.

Even to this day I don't understand why people think its such a good game. Just seemed so mid-range and uninteresting compared to the other games that were out there, though I will agree, the cut scenes were amazing for their time.
Because it's almost perfectly balanced. Starcraft:Broodwar is to RTS games, what Go is to board games. They're both #1 as far as difficulty is concerned (for their respective genres).

I was lent a copy by a friend. "This is awesome, play it!"

I may be used to book quality storylines, but regardless, I found the story to be quite... lacking in... well, story.

The game itself I found to be too fast, the AI cheated constantly and blatently (common band aid for crappy AI code), AND I had come from the massive battles of total annihilation to a game with finite resources and I COULD ONLY SELECT AND COMMAND 12 UNITS AT A TIME!?!?

...

.....

........

Anyone up for a game of chess? or Total Annihilation? or even AI War?

(on an unrelated note, this entire post was written on my Wii.

My wrist hurts...)

The thing is - Multiplayer rts gamers are the minority - 3% of all customers go online the rest moves on after the campaign and some skirmish. The problem of course, is that SP Gamers (unlike me) do not go on a forum to post about it - They simply move on. (Or have you never wondered why Total War sell this well? In that people really do not move on, mods new campaigns new nations.. its pretty complex sp xperience) ;P

I for one have played any campaign of any rts, and have not played a single multiplayer session for years.

My last rts was CnC 4 which rocked - The Campaign was awesome (as usual) | Warcraft 3 also had a very good campaign (even has RPG maps ,p) and starcraft had a superb campaign (Back in the days, and unlike that horribly boring Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander (which was even more boring))

To say that rts games campaigns are for training is the silliest thing i ever read. They are a *campaign* the opposite of pointless online skirmishes!

If you'd want proof for this, check how many people bought Sins of a Solar Empire - And check how many are still around (Would say, less than 1%) to play it. Sins was imo the worst rts in recent times as well - Imbalanced boring and entirely pointless and no campaign. ^^

(Not asking for a campaign in AI War though ;p)

Aye. I was a TA'er myself. After hearing the wonders of a "Zerg Rush" I was beyond disappointed to see how weak in number it actually was.

Hey, whoa whoa now, the AI did not cheat at all as far as I know, man. All it new was where you started, otherwise it played by the exact same rules you did. Lemme lookup the old AI handbook from SCC... Bam, straight from the horses mouth:
In multiplayer and custom missions, the computer starts out with normal resources and units and follows all the same rules that human players do. The only advantage that the computer AI has is knowledge of the map-- while it still must obey line-of-sight and detection limitations, it automatically knows where resources, enemy towns, etc. are located. The AI is also extremely efficient, making it a dangerous opponent.
Looks like my memory is spot on after all these years. I gotta agree with the 12units selection. I guess it does make it more tactical, but since it was my first RTS experience, I don't mind it at all.
