Two small fixes for the next patch perhaps
« on: June 21, 2011, 04:12:05 pm »
So, a few patches that I think would be nice to lessen micromanagement.

1. The auto-build remains rebuilders/engineers doesn't work on allied planets, only on your own. So if you have turrets on an allies planet you always have to make sure to manually reconstruct engineers and remains rebuilders there. This should be fixed.

2. There should be an option to auto build energy reactors on your allies planets as well. Since you almost always have to do it anyway.

Nothing more. Best wishes:D

... I'm sure we will get that as soon as we get automatic power management.  ;D

I don't actually want that. I personally like the micro aspect of managing your energy, since you can play a little risky by always having just 10k power but bring in a little more money or play it safe and always have at least 50k excess power.

And auto-building energy reactors already works for your own planets, so why not allied as well? Same thing for the auto-build of engineers/remains rebuilders. It already works for your own planets, I don't see any reason it shouldn't work on allied planets as well.

Auto power management is just wrong, there would be no point in having power if it took care of itself!!!

This is a strategy game, a bit of micro is needed.

There's definitely a fine line between too much micromanagement...and the game playing itself for you.  I don't feel like I'm the right person to make that judgement, but I'll agree that automatic power management would definitely make things a lot easier (and maybe not in a good way).

I completely agree with the suggestions in the OP though :)

I don't want the game to play itself for me!

The auto-build function for power, if implemented, should be OFF by default.

I want to manage my own power, building one on each ally planet would be too much.

I don't understand why automatic power management would be a bad thing. Do you feel that it's somehow difficult? Is meaningless clicking and forces pausing the game whenever you lose a base. In a game like starcraft, that makes sense for what they're trying to do, but in a grand strategy game extra clicking should take a backseat to actual gameplay.

For example, trying to have the lowest possible power on is really not how you're supposed to do it. You are supposed to optimize by the cheapest possible.

metalCrystalpowerRate(power per resource)
2250001250
151540,0001333
404080,0001000

As you can see, you always turn on as many mark 2 reactors, followed by Mark one until you achieve the lowest possible power. If you are still negative, then you turn on a mark three, and repeat the algorithm. I am able to do it without doing any math at all, just by going through the process of turning on all the reactors in the proper order and repeating the process if I lose a base. I don't understand what this adds to the fun factor or strategy. As I understand it, the reason reactors are in the game is to enforce consequences for losing bases and to prevent spamming structures and ships everywhere, not for you to partake in some repetitive optimization clicking.

This has actually been addressed by Chris in the past:

I don't know if his opinion has changed at all since then, but that seems to pretty well cover the topic.

Let's make one thing clear.
I DON'T WANT AUTOMATIC POWER MANAGEMENT.

That's not what I'm asking for. From the CTRLS screen, you can already auto-build power reactors on all your own planets. BUT, it doesn't work for allied planets. Now this is what I'm asking for, auto-build energy reactors on allied planets also.

It's not like it's a totally new system feature, you can already auto-builld engineers/remains rebuilders and energy reactors on your own planets, just make it so you can auto-build them on your allies planets as well.

I for one like the micro-aspect of managing your energy but building the energy reactors themselves individually is a chore. The devs clearly also understood this since they implemented auto-build of energy reactors for your own planets on the CTRLS screen. It should work for allied planets as well is what I'm saying.

I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head here!

I'd go on but I don't think I can make the point any more than Chris already has.

(But yes, that's all off topic!)

Philo, if it helps put your mind at rest: yes, I understand that you're just asking for the existing auto-build-energy-reactors controls to work on allied planets as well as your own planets :)

You're not the only person to ask; it's something I'm intending to make work when I get a chance.  Same deal with the engineer and rebuilder controls.

Auto re-build removes the need for you to manage the power resource and simplifies the game, if I don't build enough power and I lose one then it's my fault my ships are on low power and my build queues grind to a halt.

If the game fixed all this for me then it would remove skill from the game.

I want to be forced to be careful with my resources (inc power) and to defend them, otherwise why bother?

I can understand auto-rebuilding smaller units such as engineers and turrets because there a so many of them and you'd expect that to happen because it can be micro intensive.

Which is exactly why the player should mange them.

Auto rebuilding doesn't remove that need, believe me:

- If you're on the edge energy-wise, a single short interruption due to an energy reactor getting taken out by a raid starship can bring _all_ your forcefields down across your empire, among other problems.

- If an AI raid takes out the reactor and the command station, the auto-rebuild won't help you there (nothing to rebuild it with).
