Spec Force Guard Post and AIP
« on: September 05, 2011, 04:39:47 am »
The spec force guard post is kinda odd at the moment. There's an AIP penalty for killing it but snipers auto-target it, it's the only guard post that's not radar dampened and it went from being a fairly dangerous thing to approach to a total joke (never mind that its counter went from missile frigates to bombers) that gets sniped to death the moment you bring anything snipey into the system. It just feels like a relic now, something that no longer really fits into the game's structure. Also the AIP is practically unavoidable if you need to get rid of an AI Eye in the system.

I don't know what should be done but I do think that something is necessary.

Seeing how there is an entire AI dedicated to special forces guard post i definitely think they need a buff.
Maybe give them stats close to a tech I fortress? (and buff/ rework the patrol for special forces)

Agree.  I just kind of see them as a +1 AIP penalty for certain systems.  Maybe if reainforcements to Special Forces GPs on alerted system were auto-freed they'd be something to worry about.

Sounds like a good post to make in Arcen's bugtracker (as a suggestion post). If you haven't made an account for mantis, I'd encourage all of you to do so as a lot of discussion and bug reporting is done there rather than on the forums. (the developers had a much easier time keeping track of stuff with it.)

here's the sticky with the link that you can find in the support forums. Community involvement is encouraged around here so feel free to join in, I'm sure they would appreciate your suggestions.

And Welcome to the forums in case any of you haven't been greeted yet.

I think Mantis makes sense once we figure out what to do.

I also agree. I would have no idea that Special Forces posts represent anything special at all if it weren't for having read about Special Forces in outside material. SF ships aren't labeled as such, and taking out SF posts has never resulted in a perceptible change in ship flow... and yeah, the posts themselves are wimpy. :)

I've always wondered why they have a 0.1 heavy attack penalty myself, seemed like an odd decision

It was useful back when FF bearers counted as heavy so protecting your army with those would dull the post's return fire but I have no idea what common units even use the heavy hull.
